Big Fire At Downtown Yakima Church

YAKIMA - The historic St. Joseph Catholic Church in downtown Yakima burned yesterday, causing electrical power to be temporarily shut off to some of the area's major businesses.

No injuries were reported from the fire, which broke out about noon.

The Catholic Diocese of Yakima said the church, built in 1903, serves a congregation of about 2,400 families.

A renovation project already was planned for the church, but it still is in the fund-raising stage, church officials said.
