BELL SETS NATIONAL RECORD
Jill Bell became the best freshman long jumper in state history in the spring. She made that statement on a national level last weekend by setting a Junior Olympic record for her age group.
Bell jumped 20 feet, 2 1/2 inches in a regional meet at Eastern Washington University on Saturday. It was 10 inches better than her previous best and a record for the 15- and 16-year-old age group at the Junior Olympics. The previous best was 20-2 1/4 by Katy Harrison of East Point, Ga., in 1980.
Bell turned 16 earlier this month and will be a sophomore at Bellevue High School in the fall.
