Prep Beat -- Franklin, Ballard Getting New Basketball Coaches

Jason Kerr, assistant basketball coach at O'Dea, has been named head boys coach at Franklin High School.

At Ballard, Trevor Harada is taking over for Max Silverman, who resigned after two years.

Kerr, 26, succeeds Ron Drayton, who resigned last month, citing difficulties with an administrator he wouldn't name. Drayton guided Franklin to seven state-tournament appearances in eight years at the school, posted a 155-54 record, and won the 1994 and '95 AA state tournaments. The Earthquake recovered from opening-day losses in the past two 4A state tournaments to finish fifth.

Kerr, who played at Blanchet, said "I'm pumped" about the new job. The Earthquake graduated three seniors, among them Jimmie Haywood, who will play at Oregon State. But a good nucleus returns, led by Alvin Snow and A.J. Brooks.

Kerr said he feels ready for the job after working with O'Dea Athletic Director Monte Kohler and basketball Coach Phil Lumpkin.

Harada, son of Al Harada, who coached Ballard for nine years ending in 1997, takes over for Silverman, who had seasons of 7-15 and 10-10. Ballard Athletic Director Louise Ono said Silverman's decision to leave coaching appears linked to his appointment to an administrative internship at Ballard in the fall.

Trevor Harada was an assistant under his father and Silverman.

Hornick honored

Theresa Hornick, Seattle Prep's four-time All-Metro pitcher, has been selected Gatorade softball player of the year for Washington.

Hornick will pitch for Villanova next season.

She had a 15-3 record for Prep this season with 302 strikeouts and 25 walks in 134 innings. She allowed only 40 hits and posted an earned-run average of 0.31. She was 65-12 with 958 strikeouts and an ERA of 0.95 in her career. She also batted .400.

"I don't think we're going to see another Theresa Hornick for awhile," Prep Coach Jeff Pietz said.
