Garfield's Sheen Named Top Coach
Garfield's dramatic improvement in fastpitch softball this season has earned KingCo 4A Conference coach-of-the-year honors for the Bulldogs' Lyle Sheen.
The Bulldogs, who went 2-16 last year in their first year of KingCo membership, went 8-10 in league play this season.
They swept their two-game series with fellow city schools Roosevelt and Franklin and earned four wins against Eastside teams, sweeping Lake Washington and splitting games with Redmond and Eastlake. Last year, the Bulldogs were winless against Eastside teams.
"I think we're starting to develop a program that's going to be competitive more often," said Sheen, Bulldog coach for nine seasons.
No city softball player made the All-KingCo first team but three made the second team - Bulldog shortstop Megan Brown and outfielder Megan Beaver, plus Franklin first baseman Coriann McDonald.
Brown, a junior, was Garfield's top hitter with a .459 average.
