Cross Country / South Puget Sound League Subdistrict -- Soph's Future Almost Now -- Auburn's Egerdahl Runs Strong Second In Girls Race

SPANAWAY LAKE - Lindsey Egerdahl eyed the competition and caught a glimpse of the runner in red.

"I remember last year at state, she was next to me and I went, `Oh, that's Kim Stone. That's my goal,' " Egerdahl said.

And she is getting closer to it.

Egerdahl ran with Stone for nearly two miles in yesterday's South Puget Sound League subdistrict girls cross-country meet at the 3.1-mile Spanaway Lake Park course. Then Stone stepped away and went on to win by 20 seconds. The Bethel senior is a savvy runner. She won the AAA state championship as a sophomore and finished third in the 4A meet last fall - when Egerdahl was a freshman at Auburn.

Stone and Egerdahl express mutual admiration. Both said of the other, "I love running with her."

Stone is set on winning another state title this season and predicts Egerdahl can follow in her footsteps in the future. "Definitely," she said. "She's an awesome runner."

Egerdahl ran with Stone yesterday despite nearly running out of her left shoe, which came untied during the first 50 yards.

"It was a major mental setback," she said. "I thought about stopping to tie it, but I was too lazy to do it. I knew I would have to sprint to catch back up again."

Enumclaw freshman Allison Tubbs did have to catch up after falling at the start when she got tangled with another runner.

"There were lots of legs," Tubbs said. "It took me awhile to catch up and it kind of sucked a lot of my energy."

Tubbs, who lost only to Egerdahl during the league season (and then only at the finish), fought back to finish ninth.

Federal Way's Wendi Steele, who battled a midseason slump, ran her best race of the season and finished third, helping the Eagles (113 points) to a second-place finish behind Rogers (72). Tahoma, the North Division champion, was third at 118, followed by Curtis (133), Auburn (148), Kentlake (202), Enumclaw (215) and Sumner (231). All advanced to the West Central 4A District tournament on Oct. 28.

Kentlake sophomores Diana Dominguez and Joyce Don finished 5-6.

Tahoma was led by freshman Ellen Murray, and Coach Gary Conner said the best is yet to come from the Bears.

"We're ready for district," he said. "It's `Bring it on,' now. We're running really well."

Christie Youde, another freshman, finished 14th for the Bears, just behind Kent-Meridian's Jennifer Trujillo.

Federal Way Coach Bill Harris was happy with the way his girls ran, Steele and Elizabeth Miloscia in particular. Miloscia stepped up to score as the Eagles' No. 5 runner, placing 43rd.

"We competed well," Harris said.

Rogers, the only South Division team to beat Federal Way during the regular season, was paced by freshman Angela Taylor, who was fourth. The Rams put two others in the top 12 and four in the top 16.
