Outlook - Young Cougars lost nine players to graduation. Only two seniors on roster. Stressing conditioning, hope it overcomes lack of top-notch talent. Goal is to finish sixth or higher.

Eastlake Wolves

Coach - Bud Peterson, fourth year.

1997 record - 5-4 league, tied for fifth in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - Brandon Keeley, sr.; Richard Chiu, sr.; Kris Rorberg, sr.; Trent Sensiba, sr.; Tom Clendenin, sr.

Impact newcomers - Brian Rowe, sr.; Ian Schiller, jr.; Surina Justice, sr.; Mike Bolger, jr.; Jason Sambrano, jr.; Bryant Peterson, sr.

Outlook - Wolves lost to Garfield in league opener, but should be better than a year ago. Depth is good, particularly in doubles. Keeley qualified for state, but didn't participate because partner moved out of district.

Franklin Earthquake

Coach - Roy Prior, first year.

1997 record - 0-9, 10th in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - McKim Boyce, so.; J.D. Pugh, jr.; Christian Youtz, so.; Branden Lew, so.

Impact newcomers - John Petersen, fr.; John Mitchell, fr.

Outlook - Earthquake's season was to start today, the first time enough players will have been eligible. No seniors, 10 freshmen on roster. Peterson might turn out to be one of the league's best freshmen.

Garfield Bulldogs

Coach - Dave Winfield, third year.

1997 record - 9-0, KingCo 4A Conference champions.

Returning varsity - Daniel Vaughn, sr.; Matt Look, sr.; Jon Hubert, jr.; Matt Lee, jr.; Andy Pills, jr.; Jesse Kim, so.; David Lewis, sr.; Tushar Kumar, sr.

Impact newcomers - Elvito Alexander, so.; Geoff Findley, so.

Outlook - Bulldogs are capable of defending their '97 league championship. Vaughn and Look are state-tournament veterans, having qualified in doubles. Oct. 8 match against Lake Washington could decide title again.

Inglemoor Vikings

Coach - Dave Buchheim, first year.

1997 record - 6-3 league, fourth in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - Mike Uffens, jr.; K.C. Nash, sr.; Brett Vandenberg, jr.; Dave Tun, jr.; Brian Baugh, jr.; Matt Anderton, sr.

Impact newcomers - Dane Worthington, so.; Tyler Larson, sr.; Derek Cone, jr.

Outlook - Vikings should contend for league title and multiple state berths. Vandenberg and Tun are good doubles team. Uffens and Anderton haven't been pushed yet this season in singles.

Juanita Rebels

Coach - Taylor Terao, second year.

1997 record - 2-7 league, seventh in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - Cuong Ngo, sr.; Jeff Wheeler, sr.; Matt Lefchuck, jr.; Drew Matson, jr.; Calvin Lam, sr.

Impact newcomers - Andy Kieffer, so.

Outlook - Ngo, who has played just three years, is emerging as solid player. Rebels could better record from a year ago.

Lake Washington Kangaroos

Coach - Jim Waters, fourth year.

1997 record - 8-1 league, second in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - David Huang, jr.; Ryan Clark, sr.; Colin Bleckner, sr.; Eric Brende, sr.; Peter Malcolm, sr.

Impact newcomers - Travis Terry, so.; Josh Rapkin, so.; Greg Lindner, so.; Jordan Omley, sr.; Eric Burnett, jr.; Teru Olson, so.

Outlook - Kangs should challenge for league title again, behind strong top four players and good supporting depth. Terry should be among league's best singles players in his first year in program.

Redmond Mustangs

Coach - Marceil Whitney, third year.

1997 record - 7-2 league, third in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - Lam Nguyen, sr.; Ye-sun Lin, jr.; Terrance Keenan, jr.; Matt Hall, sr.; Davey Dunlop, jr.; Chad Bearwaldt, jr.

Impact newcomers - Samson Chaing, so.

Outlook - Mustangs lost close match to Lake Washington but shouldn't lose many more. Nguyen was 7-2 at No. 1 singles last year and Lin was 7-2 at No. 2. Chaing jumps into top six in his first year, making 'Stangs very tough.

Roosevelt Roughriders

Coach - Jake Moe, sixth year.

1997 record - 1-8 league, tied for eighth in KingCo 4A.

Returning varsity - David Fine, sr.; Robbie Ames, sr.; Jan Turecek, sr.; Rick Nishimura, sr.; Tyler Pepple, sr.; Alex Morrison, sr.; Steve Fong, jr.; Eric Rose, jr.; Tyson Obleada, jr.

Impact newcomers - Andrew Nishimura, so.; Chris Sommarstrom, jr.

Outlook - Teds should move to the middle of the pack this year. Obleada and Fong could contend for a state berth in doubles. Teds gave Sammamish a tough match in preseason which bolds well for improvement.

Woodinville Falcons

Coach - Alvin Horn, second year.

1997 record - 1-8, tied for eighth in Kingco 4A.

Returning varsity - Chris Ross, sr.; Sina Nazemi, sr.; Dan Peterson, sr.; Brett Butler, jr.; Brian Catseo, jr.; Tori Shimono, jr.

Impact newcomers - Trent Neutebaur, so.

Outlook - Falcons should better record from a year ago, thanks to return of seven players with varsity experience. Doubles will be excellent, and Neugebaur, one of the league's best sophomores, provides even more depth.

KingCo 3A

Bellevue Wolverines

Coach - Chris Hoffman, fourth year.

1997 record - 6-2, third in KingCo 3A, fifth at district.

Returning varsity - Brad Cahill, sr.; Jack Groseclose, sr.; Shuyler Mowe, sr.; Zach Green, jr.; John Zook, jr.; Kevin Ryan, jr.; Tyler Hass, so.; Matts Pinard, so.

Impact newcomers - Aaron Smith, sr.

Outlook - Wolverines lost state-qualifier David Irons to graduation, but should finish in the league's upper half again. Groseclose, Cahill and Mowe lead experienced group of returners that could produce a state-entry or two.

Cedarcrest Red Wolves School does not have a boys tennis team.

Interlake Saints

Coach - Jerry Akita, 30th year.

1997 record - 4-4, tied for fifth in KingCo 3A.

Returning varsity - Chris Pilkey, jr.; Yih-Wei Chien, sr.

Impact newcomers - Chris Falk, jr.; Matt Wagner, sr.; Mark Pan, jr.; Jeff Kirby, so.; Jordan Mason, so.

Outlook - Pilkey, fifth in league and sixth in district singles tournaments last season, will be one the league's better players. Chien gives Saints solid 1-2 combination. How inexperienced players behind them progress is critical.

Issaquah Indians

Coach - Ed McCormack, second year.

1997 record - 4-4 league, tied for fifth in KingCo 3A.

Returning varsity - Luke Siebert, jr.

Impact newcomers - Brendan Kelley, jr.; George Chen, sr.; John Winters, sr.; Adam Kiyanaga, so.; Junior Liu, so.; Jason Liu, sr.; Vivek Ganti, so.

Outlook - Issaquah players have improved dramatically since last season, when several were on junior varsity, but still inexperienced. Siebert's sister, Molly, went to state in doubles in '96. He's becoming a solid player, too.

Liberty Patriots

Coach - Rio Houston, seventh year.

1997 record - 1-7 league, tied for seventh in KingCo 3A.

Returning varsity - Colin Baynes, jr.; Mark Borys, jr.; MacKenzie Graham, jr.; Chad Diltz, sr.; Alex Fichtenholtz, so.

Impact newcomers - Mat Sharp, fr.

Outlook - Pats will struggle again this season. Baynes, a transfer from Skyline, is a solid player.

Mercer Island Islanders

Coach - Joyce Hedlund, fourth year.

1997 record - 7-1 league, second in KingCo 3A, third at district, second at Class 3A state tournament.

Returning varsity - Chad Dierickx, so.; Nicky LeClercq, jr.; Jeremy Cheung, sr.; Paul Kim, sr.; Royce Yuen, sr.; Matt Mormino, jr.

Impact newcomers - Weston Floyd, fr.; Robert Vincent, fr.; Henry Chan, sr.; Chris Cahoon, sr.; Jacob Rosenblum, jr.; Paul Shepherd, jr.; Jason Kwan, sr.; Jon Borowski, sr.; Matt Pringle, sr.; Chris Lum, sr.

Outlook - Islander match with Newport tomorrow probably will determine league title again. Dierickx, who made the league final as a freshman, leads a deep, talented group of players that should produce several state qualifiers.

Mount Si Wildcats

Coach - Jolene Gensheimer, fifth year.

1997 record - 1-7 league, tied for seventh in KingCo 3A.

Returning varsity - David Butler, sr.; Todd Barry, so.; Thomas Fennel, sr.; Max Gordon, sr.; T.J. Johnson, jr.

Impact newcomers - Jacob Waggoner, fr.; Heath Jones, fr.

Outlook - Very experienced Wildcats can win more than last season. Five varsity players return. Could make up for lack of high-end talent.

Newport Knights

Coach - Jack Wilson, third year.

1997 record - 8-0, KingCo 3A champions, district champions, third at Class 3A state tournament.

Returning varsity - Rob Condiotty, sr.; Scott Friedman, sr.; Chuck Haselwood, sr.; Tyler Kinsey, so.; Arpan Podduturi, so.; Panch Romero, sr.; Adam Short, sr.; Mike Yu, sr.

Impact newcomers - Robert Chan, so.; Phillip Ma, so.; James Oh, so.; Joe Silver, jr.

Outlook - Four Knights with state-tournament experience return, making Knights the favorite to repeat as league champions and possibly win state. Friedman and Condiotty can win state title in doubles. Short could contend in singles.

Sammamish Totems

Coach - Eva Christo, second year.

1997 record - 5-3 league, fourth in KingCo 3A, sixth at district.

Returning varsity - Stephen Lu, jr.; Drew Eicher, jr.; Peng Tea, jr.; Jimmy Shen, jr.; Eddie Liu, jr.; Huy Duong, jr.

Impact newcomers - Andy Shim, so.; Ronald Pham, jr.; Mitch Biernoth, so.; Justin Low, sr.

Outlook - Totems think they can challenge Newport and Mercer Island for league title. Their top three - Tea, Eicher and Lu - is extremely competitive. Tea placed fifth in state doubles tournament last spring.

Skyline Spartans

Coach - Sally Sullivan, first year.

1997 record - 0-8, ninth in KingCo 3A.

Returning varsity - Ryan Houck, so.; Jason Edgar, so.; Mike Tobias, jr.; Justin Rupple, so.; Alex Lee, jr.

Impact newcomers - Nick Pugh, sr.; Will Bruns, so.

Outlook - Spartans still very young, with only two seniors and two juniors, and the majority has no formal tennis training. They'll get it this fall. Sullivan played on the national junior circuit.
