Outlook - Cougars, who opened with win over Inglemoor, could challenge Eastlake and LW for division title. Fore capable of improving on last season, when he was an alternate to state. One senior, four freshmen in top 15.

Eastlake Wolves

Coach - Marilyn Henselman, second year.

1997 record - Second in Lake Division, fourth in dual-meet tournament, sixth at medalist tournament, sixth at Class 4A state tournament.

Returning varsity - Brad Faller, sr.; Jorgen Gustafson, sr.; Mike Larson, sr.; Cord Johnson, so.; Brian MacInnes, so.; Steve Ramsey, jr.

Impact newcomers - Nathan Hunt, jr.; Pat Collum, jr.; Lance Rottger, jr.; Artie Schenck, jr.; James Sessa, jr.

Outlook - Excellent one-two duo in Faller and Larson, who finished ninth and 10th at medalist tournament. Six players with varsity experience return, giving Wolves good depth and good shot at division, league championships.

Franklin Earthquake

Coach - Greg Morris, first year.

1997 record - Fifth in Lake Division.

Returning varsity - Erik Nickland, sr.; Raymond Delos Rayes, jr.; Quentin Way, sr.

Impact newcomers - Michael Walker, jr.; Travis Roulest, fr.; Colby Daniels, fr.; Isaac Rambo, jr.; Mark Westbrook, so.

Outlook - Nickland was medalist in opening loss to Garfield. Walker, a transfer from Kennedy, gives Quake solid first two players. Morris hopes rest of team learns from them and gets better as season progresses.

Garfield Bulldogs

Coach - Tony Fore, 12th year.

1997 record - Fourth in Lake Division, ninth in medalist tournament.

Returning varsity - Colin Slingsby, jr.; Sean Tufts, sr.; Donald Hildwein, jr.; Tom John, so.; Steve Heller, so.

Impact newcomers - Webster Proctor, fr.; David Eaton, fr.; Ben Secord, so.; Ryan Scott, fr.; Tyler Fleck, so.

Outlook - Top six much stronger than in past, but Bulldogs still have way to go to catch up to Eastside programs. Slingsby and Tufts are possible district qualifiers, as is Proctor, who is playing No. 1 as a freshman.

Lake Washington Kangaroos

Coach - Fred Mabbott, fifth year.

1997 record - First in Lake Division, dual-meet runners-up, fifth in medalist tournament.

Returning varsity - Kevin Wang, so.; Nick Bajema, jr.

Impact newcomers - Kyle Martin, fr.; Clark Richards, jr.; Matt Bajema, fr.; Dustin Moran, jr.; Ryan Schnepf, jr.; Mark McIntosh, jr.; Aaron Iverson, sr.; Dustin Trott, fr.

Outlook - Kangs, who lost seven to graduation, lost Wednesday to Eastlake, but should be good by season's end. Wang qualified for state as a freshman - he missed cut by one stroke. Nick Bajema and Martin have similar potential.

Mountain Division

Inglemoor Vikings

Coach - Craig Dexter, first year.

1997 record - Third in dual-meet tournament, tied for medalist tournament championship.

Returning varsity - Jeff Everett, jr.; Rick Cook, jr.; Brian McKee, sr.

Impact newcomers - Brian O'Neal, fr.; Billy Berkeihiser, so.; Brian Carlson, so.; Kevin Weil, so.; Sam Szekely, jr.; Ryan Keeney, fr.

Outlook - Vikings lost two state qualifiers from successful team, so repeating medalist, district titles will be tough. Good balance. Keeney, the Washington Junior Golf state champion last summer, will help Vikes stay competitive.

Juanita Rebels

Coach - Pat Leonard, third year.

1997 record - Fifth in Mountain Division, fourth in medalist tournament.

Returning varsity - Teh-wei Chien, sr.; Ty Cannon, sr.; Rob Yee, sr.; Travis Andrews, jr.; Alec Parks, so.

Impact newcomers - Blake Byrne, so.; Alex Vaught, jr.; Jason Gragg, jr.; Brett Flowers, jr.

Outlook - Rebels beat Woodinville Wednesday, now in control of division. Chien and Cannon, both state qualifiers, form one of league's top 1-2 combinations. Chien, a state qualifier every year, made cut. Development of depth critical.

Redmond Mustangs

Coach - Peter Barrett, second year.

1997 record - Third in Mountain Division, sixth in dual-meet tournament, third in medalist tournament.

Returning varsity - Troy Johnsen, sr.; Tyler Johnsen, so.; Nick Bartolo, so.; Robert Linville, jr.; Kevin Rufert, sr.; B.J. Dixon, sr.

Impact newcomers - Brian Michel, fr.

Outlook - Mustangs are deep but lack tournament experience. They opened with win over Roosevelt, could compete in dual meets with rest of division. Repeating third-place finish in medalist tournament will be tougher.

Roosevelt Roughriders

Coach - Darrel Montzingo, 13th year.

1997 record - Fourth in Mountain Division, eighth in medalist tournament.

Returning varsity - Eric Anderson, sr.; Casey Granston, jr.; Tyler Hunnex, sr.; Matt Verdiect, jr.; Alec Friedhoff, so.

Impact newcomers - Elliott Kunugi, so.

Outlook - Teds return five players from last season. Most are long hitters. Lost to Redmond in opener on tight course. Development of better consistency is key. Granston is a returning district qualifier.

Woodinville Falcons

Coach - Mike Stewart, fourth year.

1997 record - Dual-meet champions, tied for medalist tournament championship, 11th at state tournament.

Returning varsity - Sean Peterson, sr.; Travis Ault, sr.; Kevin Ambrose, jr.; Matt Stewart, so.; Jak Thulien, so.; Brad Turner, so.

Impact newcomers - Sprague Kolp, sr.; Ryan Conversano, so.; Steve Sabourin, so.

Outlook - Falcons lost league tournament winner and runner-up to graduation but are team to beat again this fall. Peterson and Ault are excellent players. Kolp, who transferred to Woodinville, might be league's best.

KingCo 3A

Sky Division

Bellevue Wolverines

Coach - Dave Sherbrooke, fifth year.

1997 record - First in Sky Division, dual-meet champions, fifth in district tournament.

Returning varsity - Jon Christensen, sr.; Jeff Nellans, sr.; Andrew Doss, sr.; Mitch Kearns, jr.; Beau Crosetto, so.

Impact newcomers - Mike Zefkeles, fr.

Outlook - Two-time defending dual-meet champions are favored to get back to title match. Five varsity players return, including state qualifiers Kearns and Christensen. Zefkeles, who has finished in the top three in each of last three Washington Junior Golf state tournaments, is league's top freshman.

Issaquah Indians

Coach - Craig Torget, third year.

1997 record - Second in Sky Division, third in dual-meet tournament.

Returning varsity - Sean Hedges, jr.; Zach Smith, sr.

Impact newcomers - Bret Flores, jr.; Jory Halperin, so.; Ricky Schnepf, jr.; Ben Belur, fr.; Scott Shively, fr.; Trent Tsuchikawa, sr.; Corey Buckles, jr.

Outlook - Young players are good, but graduation of five seniors will make it tough to challenge for title. Hedges was 10th at the medalist tournament last season and should contend for state berth.

Mercer Island Islanders

Coach - Gary Adrian, second year.

1997 record - Third in Sky Division, fifth in dual-meet tournament.

Returning varsity - Ben Garrett, so.; Scott Sulman, sr.; Matt Macauley, sr.; Nathan Walker, jr.; Jon McCoy, sr.

Impact newcomers - Matt Buchanan, so.; Andy Mesher, so.; Alex Dunlop, fr.; Jeff Anderson, so.

Outlook - Islanders should challenge Bellevue for division title, despite loss of Bryan Buskas and Ryan Osborn, who were second and third in medalist tournament. Good mix of youth and experience. Good depth. Good team.

Newport Knights

Coach - Steve Anderson, 12th year.

1997 record - Fourth in Sky Division, eighth in dual-meet tournament.

Returning varsity - Mike Stewart, sr.; Chris Lombardo, sr.; Seung Lee, sr.; Tom Hayhurst, jr.; Tom McWilliams, jr.; Tom Hutchison, jr.; Matt Hawley, sr.

Impact newcomers - Eric Dworkis, so.; Royce Koh, fr.

Outlook - Plenty of experienced players back for Knights. Stewart, however, is their only returning district qualifier.

Skyline Spartans

Outlook - Red Wolves' top three as good as any. Berg, last year's league-tournament champ, should contend for district, state championships. Need the three new varsity members to play well in order to compete in tough league.

Interlake Saints

Coach - Dar Bullock, sixth year.

1997 record - Third in Valley Division, sixth in dual-meet tournament, fourth in district tournament.

Returning varsity - Scott Shiroma, sr.; John Bailey, jr.; Cory Flynn, jr.; Nick Zevenbergen, sr.; Austen Fulmor, jr.; Mark Ward, so.; Sekou Caldwell, sr.

Impact newcomers - Jason Roundtree, fr.

Outlook - Saints boast last two district champions in Shiroma ('97) and Bailey ('98). Flynn, a district alternate, gives Saints a third top-flight player. Seven varsity players return, giving Saints shot at division title.

Liberty Patriots

Coach - Bob Carlson, 10th year.

1997 record - Second in Valley Division, fourth in dual-meet tournament.

Returning varsity - Matt Tsurasaki, sr.; Zach Bressan, sr.; Scott Clementz, sr.; Nick Southards, sr.

Impact newcomers - Ryan McClintock, fr.

Outlook - Pats return four seniors from last season's division runner-up squad, including district qualifier Tsurasaki. So core is there to challenge for division title. Development of depth is critical.

Mount Si Wildcats

Coach - Marlin Jensen, 26th year.

1997 record - Fourth in Valley Division, seventh in dual-meet tournament.

Returning varsity - Luke Teller, sr.; Jared Drake, sr.; Josh Van Kirk, sr.; Brent Dance, sr.; Derek Belt, jr.

Impact newcomers - Erik Larson, fr.

Outlook - Wildcats return four seniors from last season, including Drake, who finished sixth at medalist tournament. Teller led team in preseason qualifying with 34.5 stroke average. Development of new players key.

Sammamish Totems

1997 record - First in Valley Division, dual-meet runners-up, KingCo tournament champions, third in district tournament.

Outlook - Totems capable of repeating as division champs. Lost two state qualifiers, but return one in Grundberg, who tied for district medalist last season. Allen and Griffin also qualified for district.
