National Junior Olympic Championships -- Colorado Girl Sets 3,000 Mark; Seattleite Wins
Dana Boyle of Carbondale, Colo., set a national age-group record of 9 minutes 37.24 seconds in the young women's (17-18) 3,000-meter run in the USA Track and Field Junior Olympic National Championships at Husky Stadium.
Sara Gorton of Phoenix finished second yesterday in 9:43.53, followed by Zelma Jackson of the Bronx, N.Y., in 10:04.87. Megan Johnson of Seattle Prep wound up fourth in 10:18.37.
Seattle's Noelani Kaneko, who will attend Blanchet High School next fall, won the girls 13-14 age-group 3,000 in 10:25.76.
Kevin Powell, a Garfield High senior, finished fourth in the young men's (17-18) shot with a put of 54 feet 2 1/2 inches.
Steven Ziemba of Omaha, Neb., won the event at 57-11 1/2, followed by Doug Sells (57-4 3/4) of Shelton and Jonathan Reeves (55-4 1/4) of Houston, Texas.
Angela Hilgers of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., set a national record of 10 feet 10 in the girls intermediate (15-16) pole vault.
