Police Search For Gunman Who Killed 4 In Navajo Town

CANONCITO, N.M. - A Navajo man said to be angry that relatives had turned his brother over to authorities for $1,000 allegedly shot four of them to death and wounded three other people.

Authorities were searching in the remote high desert today for Stanley Secatero, 25, who neighbors said had just returned from prison to the Canoncito Navajo Reservation.

Sgt. Tommy Rogers of the Navajo police confirmed today that four people were dead after yesterday's attack. Neighbors said the dead included Stanley Secatero's grandmother Lena Secatero, uncle Eddie Secatero and aunts Agnes Secatero and Rose Nelson.

Secatero's brother, Wesley, was wanted on an aggravated-battery charge in Albuquerque. Stanley Secatero believed family members had turned Wesley in for a $1,000 reward, said neighbors Brenda Platero and Raymond Willis.

One of the wounded, Karen Sandoval, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was in satisfactory condition at a hospital. The names and conditions of the other two wounded were not available.

The heat wave in the South and West - blamed for at least 60 deaths - remained relentless today.

For a 12th straight day, temperatures topped 100 in central Texas today. The heat wave has claimed at least 32 lives across the state and caused $1.5 billion in crop damage.

At Fort Bragg, N.C., three soldiers on a 12-mile march were hospitalized yesterday for heat exhaustion. One was in critical condition today.

The high was 126 degrees yesterday in Bullhead City, Ariz., tying the record, and 123 in Lake Havasu City. Parker, Coolidge and Buckeye, Ariz., all logged in at 119.

12-YEAR-OLD BOY CHARGED IN 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL'S SLAYING

NEW PHILADELPHIA, Ohio - A 12-year-old boy who helped search for a missing 5-year-old girl after her mother paid him $5 has been charged with her slaying.

The body of Devan Duniver was found June 28 beneath underbrush and storm debris near her home about 80 miles from Cleveland. The girl, reported missing a day earlier, had been stabbed in the neck.

The boy was charged as a juvenile with murder, police said. Authorities have refused to discuss details of the case, including the motive and the exact circumstances of Devan's slaying. There was no evidence the girl had been sexually molested, police said.

About 400 people helped look for the girl. Her mother, Lori Duniver, said the 12-year-old stayed by her side the night of June 27 as she searched. Duniver said the boy joined the search after she gave him $5.

PENNSYLVANIA COAL-MINE BLAST LEAVES ONE DEAD, ONE INJURED

JOLIETT, Pa. - A miner was in critical condition today after methane exploded in a coal mine, killing one of his colleagues.

The miners were digging 4,000 feet in the Summit Anthracite Mine in Keffer's Mountain, 500 feet below the surface, when the explosion occurred yesterday morning.

Rescue workers found the body of Gary Lee Laudenslager, 23. Peter Klinger, 32, was treated for cuts, a broken arm and respiratory problems. A nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa., said his condition was critical.

Methane gas commonly seeps through coal mines and is supposed to be vented as part of safety procedures.
