Dr. Kieran Hynes Was Friend To Heart Patients

Kieran Michael Hynes was happy to follow in his father's footsteps.

Like his father, he played tennis well enough to win some Washington youth championships and might have turned pro. But like his father, Dr. Hynes became a cardiologist.

He and his brother John were partners in a clinic on Bellevue's 116th Avenue Northeast. Dr. Hynes also was former chief of cardiology and former director of the coronary care unit at Overlake Hospital Medical Center.

"He was a kind-hearted man, a true optimist, always ready with a joke or piece of philosophy, who became good friends with many of the patients he treated," said his daughter Karen Hynes of Seattle.

Dr. Hynes died of cancer June 3. He was 56.

Born in Seattle, he graduated from Seattle Preparatory School and the University of Washington Medical School. He had held a tennis scholarship and was captain of the tennis team.

Again like his father, cardiologist Kyran Hynes, who died in 1978, he interned at Harborview Medical Center.

Michael Hynes took six years of cardiology training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and then served in the Air Force.

Other survivors include his second wife, Ann Hynes of Bellevue; his children Heidi Hynes and Charles Hynes, both of Seattle; sisters Patricia Weinstein and Sharon Lynch, both of Gig Harbor; Sheila Peterson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Mary Jane Hynes-Brissing of Bainbridge Island; and his mother, Christine Hynes of Seattle.

Services have been held. Remembrances may go to Overlake Hospital's Lane Oncology Unit, 1035 116th Ave. N.E., Bellevue, WA 98004.
