Track And Field / Kingco 3A Championships -- Interlake Takes Boys Team Title, Kamm Wins 800
KIRKLAND - Mike Kamm was bent over, trying to regain his breath after winning the 800 meters, when Sarah Lavallee walked over and tapped the Interlake junior on the shoulder to say she was OK.
Interlake won the boys team title at the KingCo 3A Conference track championships yesterday, and Kamm established himself as the favorite for the state title in the 800. But learning that his good friend was healthy was the best news of the day.
"It was good to see her up and around," Kamm said.
Lavallee, who has won four state championships, collapsed after finishing second in the 300 hurdles. She later told Kamm she knew something was wrong 100 meters into her race, and the meet was delayed 20 minutes while two aid cars were called in and the Mount Si senior was treated on the track.
She was unconscious for about a minute, according to Redmond High School trainer Tom Sylva, and experienced petite mal seizures - a series of brief convulsions. Emergency personnel gave her oxygen and fed her a liter of saline intravenously to bring her heart rate down, then released her from the medical tent just as Kamm finished his race.
This has happened to Lavallee before, the last time at a Mount Si practice, mostly because she didn't drink enough fluids or eat enough food. And she is expected to be fine for next week's district competition.
But seeing Lavallee, who earlier won the 100 hurdles in a meet-record 14.44 seconds, walk around on her power was a great sight for Kamm and everybody at Lake Washington.
KingCo 3A Boys - Kamm also anchored the victorious 1,600 relay that clinched the team title. Kevin White won three events - the 100, 200 and long jump - for the Saints, who beat Newport by four points.
KingCo 3A Girls - How do you spell distance dominance? N-E-W-P-O-R-T. The Knights claimed five of the top seven spots in the 1,600 and four of the top seven in the 3,200 to win the team title with 155 points. Sophomore Robin Dixon won both events for the Knights, who beat Bellevue by 34 points.
KingCo 4A Boys - Steve Dwyer is a little disappointed with his new hair color. The Eastlake senior joined his teammates in dying their hair for the postseason, but his turned out more yellow than blond.
He wasn't disappointed with his first performance in the new 'do, however. Dwyer won three events, two with personal bests, to help the Wolves claim their fourth consecutive team title.
"This is probably the best day I've had," Dwyer said. "I was just on."
Dwyer set a meet record in the 300-meter hurdles (38.40 seconds) and a personal best in the high jump (6 feet, 8 inches). He also won the 100 hurdles and anchored the winning 1,600 relay to help Eastlake edge Redmond by 15.5 points.
KingCo 4A Girls - Garfield senior Tiffany Giles won the 200 and 400 and anchored the winning 400 and 1,600 relays to help the Bulldogs end Lake Washington's five-year reign as league champions. Garfield junior Nicole McRae, who has mononucleosis, won the 800 in 2:20.17.
