Heier Joins Five Other Eastsiders On West Team

It has been a rewarding school year for Redmond senior Tom Heier. He was All-State in football, placed fifth in the Class AAA state wrestling meet at 148 pounds and is a contender to win the pole vault in the Class 4A state track meet this spring.

Now, Heier has accepted an appointment to the Air Force Academy, where he will play football, and has been selected to play in the East-West Summer Classic prep football game June 26 in Kennewick.

The game is not being played in Everett or Spokane for the first time since its founding in 1946.

"Through a long process, we were able to get it here," said Kamiakin High School Coach Craig Beverlin, who is coordinating the event. "If we do a good job, we'll get it every three years."

Among those who will play are four of the top quarterbacks in the state last fall: Puyallup's Luke Huard, who is headed to North Carolina; Jason Johnson of Rogers (Puyallup), who is headed to Arizona; Walla Walla's Jared Jones, who signed with Florida State; and Prosser's Tyler Thomas, who will play at Oregon State.

Heier is one of six Eastside players named to the West roster. The others are Ben Mahdavi, Mercer Island running back-linebacker; Derek Noble, Newport linebacker; Jess Fowler, Mount Si center-defensive line; Jeremy Parker, Issaquah lineman; and Mark Brandeberry, Eastside Catholic wide receiver-defensive back.

Rosters for the East-West Summer Classic, including player, high school, position and college player will attend:
