Gennifer Flowers $500,000 Richer
WASHINGTON - Gennifer Flowers says she parlayed her story of an affair with President Clinton into more than $500,000, including $250,000 for posing nude in Penthouse magazine.
Flowers, whose allegations of a 12-year affair while Clinton was Arkansas governor almost derailed his 1992 campaign, recounted her earnings in a deposition Nov. 14 in Paula Jones' sexual-harassment lawsuit against Clinton.
In his own deposition, Clinton admitted to having sex with Flowers once, in 1977, but denied a long-term affair.
Under questioning from the president's attorney, Robert Bennett, Flowers detailed the money she made capitalizing on her allegations. Flowers said she made $50,000 from a book telling her story, "Passion & Betrayal."
She said she was paid $150,000 by The Star, the supermarket tabloid that first aired her story; $25,000 from the television tabloid "A Current Affair"; $15,000 from a Spanish television show and between $5,000 and $7,500 for a German TV show.
She was paid $250,000 by Penthouse, she said. She added that she could have made more had she moved more quickly. Penthouse originally offered her $750,000, plus a share of the newsstand sales, she said. Playboy offered $650,000 plus a piece of newsstand sales.
But Flowers said she delayed the negotiations. By the time she was ready to sign the deal, Playboy was no longer interested, and Penthouse had lowered its offer, she said.
