Prep Basketball -- Franklin Deals Irish Rare Home-Court Loss

Jimmy Haywood scored 19 points, including six in the fourth quarter when Franklin staved off O'Dea for a 53-50 boys basketball victory last night at O'Dea High School.

The nonleague game pitted two of the state's top teams - the Earthquake in Class 4A, the Irish in Class 3A.

It was O'Dea's first home-court loss since 1993, and the first win for Franklin Coach Ron Drayton in the O'Dea gym.

"It's a very tough place to play," Drayton said. "We had to build some momentum before league play and we did just that."

Franklin led 52-45 with just over a minute left after Anthony Lewis, who had seven points, hit two free throws. O'Dea then went on a 5-0 run, capped by Kevin Burleson's three-pointer to pull within two points with five seconds left. Franklin's A.J. Snow, who finished with 13 points, then hit one of two free throws with three seconds left. O'Dea had a shot to tie the game, but Franklin's Sennai Atsbeha blocked a three-point attempt as the buzzer sounded.

Despite the loss, Doug Wrenn, who finished with 18 points, is confident the Irish will repeat as state champions. "We're still the best team in Metro," said Wrenn. "I still think we have the best program in the state. It was just a nonleague game."

But a nonleague game the Irish wanted to win. "It's all about bragging rights," Wrenn said.
