Mcnary Outlasts Beaverton 51-48 For 4A Championship

PORTLAND, Ore. - Nick Calaycay kicked a 22-yard field with 25 seconds left as McNary defeated Beaverton 51-48 yesterday in a wild, record-setting championship game in Oregon Class 4A high school football.

Junior quarterback Stephen Copeland, who had 433 all-purpose yards, engineered a 63-yard drive in just 1:48 to set up the winning field goal and give the Celtics (14-0) their first state title.

The win overshadowed another outstanding performance from Beaverton quarterback Taylor Barton, who passed for 448 yards and six touchdowns. The senior also caught a 7-yard touchdown pass just before halftime that cut McNary's lead to 28-24.

Barton sparked a fourth-quarter rally for the Beavers (13-1). He completed a 71-yard drive with a 19-yard touchdown pass to Chris Laybourn, then found Tanner Cole for the two-point conversion to tie the score at 48 with 2:16 left.

McNary's 51 points broke the single-game record for a 4A title game, set in 1947 when The Dalles beat Hillsboro 47-7. The total of 99 points by both teams surpassed the state mark of 59, established in Marshfield's 40-19 win over Coos Bay in 1956.

Beaverton's Jesse Levin, Barton's favorite target all season, caught 13 passes for 244 yards and had touchdown catches of 14 and 22 yards.

Barton finished the season with an Oregon season record of 4,047 yards, a record 56 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. His career totals are 7,077 yards, 87 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions in 49 games.
