Prep Basketball / Boys Nonleague -- Crawford-Led R.B. Cruises

Rainier Beach's balanced offensive attack, led by Jamal Crawford's 18 points, was too much for Renton as the Vikings won their nonleague boys basketball opener, 82-57 over the Indians.

In his first prep game, Crawford, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, also had 14 assists for Rainier Beach last night. Viking center David King added 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Renton played without two injured players. Dennis Johnson scored 13 points and Randy Wong had 11 for the Indians.

Beach led 32-26 at halftime, then pulled away with a 27-14 third quarter.

At Bainbridge 77, Lakeside 45 - Senior Mat Hervin scored all 19 of his points in the first half as the Spartans cruised to a nonleague victory in the season opener. Mike Somsen came off the bench to score 11 points and grab 11 rebounds for Bainbridge, which led 43-29 at halftime.

Bainbridge forced 18 turnovers, 14 in the second half when the Spartans outscored Lakeside 34-16. Senior Zack Dworkis led the Lions with 11 points but did not score in the fourth quarter. Shane Stenesen scored 11 points and Brennen Stokes 10 for Bainbridge.

Ballard 68, at Lynnwood 39 - Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Royals in a nonleague loss to the Beavers. The Royals made 13 of 29 free throws and 13 of 35 field-goal attempts. Ballard, meanwhile, made 23 of 48 from the field, including six three-pointers. Sean Frodesen had 16 points and Michael Thompson 13 for Ballard. Senior forward/center Dyandre Gamble had 13 points and nine rebounds for Lynnwood.

At Chief Sealth 75, Evergreen 65 - The Seahawks sank crucial free throws in the fourth quarter to earn a nonleague victory. Sealth led 50-48 after three quarters, then made eight of 10 free throws in the final period. Senior point guard Paul Smith had 10 points, eight assists and three steals, junior forward Jermaine Smith poured in 20 points and Michael Browne had 18 points for the Seahawks. Marcus Malz scored 20 points and Will Hicks 18 for Evergreen.

Chief Leschi 61, at Seattle Lutheran 51 - Chief Leschi's pressure defense helped build big leads in the first and third quarters of the nonleague opener and that was enough to offset the Saints' good efforts in the second and fourth periods. Lamont Trent scored 21 points and Doug Johns 17 for Leschi. Mike Shields led Seattle Lutheran with 13 points and eight rebounds, and Ben Zafft added eight points and nine rebounds.

At Tyee 63, West Seattle 57 - Marcus Smith scored 24 points, including four three-pointers, to help Tyee overcome 26 points by Nick Crespenial and 16 by Mark Denniston of West Seattle. Don Phillips added 12 points for Tyee and made three three-point shots.

Oak Harbor 59, Mount Vernon 58 - Senior Brannon Stone hit a short jumper with four seconds left to give the Wildcats a nonleague victory over last year's Class AAA state-tournament runners-up.

Stone rebounded a missed free throw by Mount Vernon with 15 seconds left, dribbled the length of the court and scored on an inside move.

The Bulldogs had a chance to win, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Stone hit nine of 11 free throws and finished with 24 points. Grant Leep had 26 points while converting nine of 12 from the line for the Bulldogs (0-1).

Oak Harbor struggled in the third third, scoring only five points, but exploded for 22 points in the fourth quarter behind Stone's outside touch.

Andre Marshall scored 11 points for Oak Harbor, which had 16 turnovers. Bryan Whitehead scored 10 for the Bulldogs, who had 14 turnovers.

At Foster 52, King's 35 - Junior Yusef Aziz scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as the Bulldogs jumped to a 26-16 halftime lead in the nonleague opener. Teammate Brandon Lyons scored eight of his game-high 18 points, including two three-pointers, in the fourth quarter. Deitrick Clay added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. King's made 26 turnovers and did not hit a field goal until late in the first quarter.

At Edmonds-Woodway 59, Lake Stevens 34 - Mark Arington started his senior season just like his junior one - scoring a bundle of points. He tossed in 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Warriors, who also got 12 points from Marc Keeney. T.J. Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who trailed 35-15 at intermission.

At Bothell 56, Issaquah 54 (OT) - Jason Shapiro led a fourth-quarter comeback as Bothell wiped out an 18-point deficit, forced overtime and won the nonleague opener. The Cougars, who placed eighth at the Class AAA state tournament last season, trailed 49-31 with seven minutes remaining, but went to work with full-court pressure.

Shapiro scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Cougars outscored the Indians 19-6 in the period. Bothell sophomore Taylor Evans, who did not play until the fourth quarter, scored four points in the period and hit two free throws to force overtime.

In overtime, the Cougars' Dan Sandrin made a go-ahead basket on an in-bounds play with 19 seconds remaining. Evans then made a steal and hit one of two free throws to put Bothell ahead by two. Brian Hashiguchi's steal sealed the victory.
