Prep Basketball / Boys Nonleague -- Mount Vernon Surprised

MOUNT VERNON - Senior Brannon Stone hit a short jumper with four seconds left to give Oak Harbor a 59-58 victory over Mount Vernon last night in a nonleague boys basketball game.

Stone rebounded a missed free throw by Mount Vernon with 15 seconds left, dribbled the length of the court and scored on an inside move.

The Bulldogs had a chance to win, but missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Mount Vernon lost to Mercer Island in the championship game of the Class AAA state tournament last March and is expected to be a 3A state power this season.

Stone hit nine of 11 free throws and finished with 24 points. Grant Leep had 26 points, hitting eight of 14 field goals and converting nine of 12 free throws for Mount Vernon.

Oak Harbor struggled in the third quarter, scoring only five points, but exploded for 22 in the fourth quarter behind Stone's outside touch.

Andre Marshall scored 11 points for Oak Harbor, which had 16 turnovers. Bryan Whitehead scored 10 for the Bulldogs, who had 14 turnovers.

OTHER GAMES

At Edmonds-Woodway 59, Lake Stevens 34 - Mark Arington started his senior season just like his junior one - scoring a bundle of points. He tossed in 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Warriors, who also got 12 points from Marc Keeney. T.J. Williams scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Vikings, who trailed 35-15 at intermission.

Kamiak 54, at Shorewood 49 - The Knights opened the nonleague game by scoring the first eight points and also started the second half by scoring the first six points. Shorewood cut the margin to two late in the game but missed three key free throws down the stretch. Bobby Gilbo led Kamiak with 12 points. Michael Ding led the Scots with 15 points.

Everett 55, at Mountlake Terrace 54 - Tim Bjella drove for the winning basket with 30 seconds remaining as the Seagulls won the nonleague game. Terrace led 28-19 at halftime, but Everett rallied in the third quarter. Sam Nunez made three three-pointers in the third quarter and finished with 17 points for Everett.

Neil Mendez had 21 points for the Hawks, including 13 in the second half, and teammate Nick Lano added 15 points.

Meadowdale 47, at Sedro-Woolley 44 - Junior Jordan Church hit four three-pointers to give the Chiefs a come-from-behind nonleague victory in their opener. The 6-foot guard scored 15 points for Meadowdale, which erased a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit.

The Chiefs were outscored 11-1 in the third period and trailed 38-28, but increased their defensive pressure and went on a 19-6 run the rest of the way.

Josh Cram hit two free throws to put the Chiefs ahead 45-44 with less than a minute remaining. Meadowdale scored the last six points of the game.

At Snohomish 87, Monroe 59 - Jed Kamiya scored 30 points for Snohomish in the season-opening victory. The Panthers led 44-28 at halftime.

"We shot the ball well in the first half," Snohomish Coach Len Bone said. "We were getting good shots. For our first game, we played well."

Jason Moore led Monroe with 20 points. Anthony Curcio added 17 points for the Bearcats.

John Townsan scored 23 points and had 14 rebounds for the Panthers, and Will VanDuine and Charlie Wilson scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Ballard 68, at Lynnwood 39 - Turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Royals in a nonleague loss to the Beavers. The Royals made 13 of 29 free throws and 13 of 35 field-goal attempts. Ballard, meanwhile, made 23 of 48 from the field, including six three-pointers. Sean Frodesen had 16 points and Michael Thompson 13 for Ballard. Senior forward/center Dyandre Gamble had 13 points and nine rebounds for Lynnwood.

At Foster 52, King's 35 - Junior Yusef Aziz scored 13 of his 17 points in the first half as the Bulldogs jumped to a 26-16 halftime lead in the nonleague opener. Teammate Brandon Lyons scored eight of his game-high 18 points, including two three-pointers, in the fourth quarter. Deitrick Clay added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs. King's made 26 turnovers and did not hit a field goal until late in the first quarter.

South Whidbey 37, at Bellevue Christian 33 - The Falcons led 17-2 after one quarter and then held on for the nonleague victory.

Arlington 65, at Anacortes 47 - Greg Garka scored 19 points, D.J Breon 16 and James Drinkwater 11 for the Eagles, who outscored Anacortes 24-13 in the final quarter. Matt Hardy scored 15 points for the Seahawks, who trailed 41-34 after three quarters.
