Olivia Park Elementary 200 108th St. S.W., Everett (425) 356-1302

The numbers: 731 students (5% African American, 8% Asian American, 7% Hispanic, 1% Native American, 79% white). Special-education students (20) served in regular classes. ESL students (24) go to specialized part-day program.

Highlights: New reading, language-arts, spelling and handwriting curriculum in '96-97. Students trained to work as conflict managers to help solve classmates' problems and to learn to work with others.

Teacher/parent survey: Lower marks for parent involvement.

Resources include: Computer lab. Music and PE teachers for 3rd-5th grades; librarian.

Computers used for: Multimedia projects using Kid Pix. Writing. Spreadsheet and database work. Math drills.

Parent/community support: Parents fund scholarships for summer school and other school programs. PTA operates school store, organizes ice-cream social and Young Readers Choice program. Parents advise principal on policies/programs. Two parent conferences/year, 15-30 minutes.

Achievement measured with: Report cards (some without letter grades) and teachers' written comments. Writing assessments, standardized tests and portfolios used in some grade levels.

Teacher experience:: 1-5 years (33%), 6-12 years (31%), 13-19 years (19%), more than 20 years (17%).

Before/after school: Boys & Girls Club Super Schools activities.
