Twin Boys, 16, Killed As Car Hits Tree On Camano Island

CAMANO ISLAND, Island County - Sixteen-year-old identical-twin brothers visiting here from California were killed yesterday when the station wagon they were riding in struck a tree on Camano Island.

They were identified as Kevin and James Champney of San Bruno.

The State Patrol said Kevin Champney died at the scene when the vehicle, traveling east on North Camano Drive, went off the road and struck a tree shortly after 5 p.m.

James Champney was taken to Seattle's Harborview Medical Center, where he died about an hour after the accident.

Two other teens were injured in the crash: Alex Lemaich, 16, of Camano Island, who was the driver, and Marshall Bamber, 15, also of Camano Island, according to the State Patrol in Everett.

Lemaich was in satisfactory condition in Harborview with a back injury.

Bamber was treated at Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.

Authorities said the twins lived with their father, Derek Champney, in San Bruno, but were here for a two-week visit with their mother, Pamela Champney.
