Boxing -- Olympic Medalist Remains Unbeaten

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - David Reid said he wanted to show everybody that he has a left hand, too. Mission accomplished.

Reid, the only gold medalist for the U.S. Olympic boxing team at Atlanta last summer, knocked out John Long at 1:33 of the second round last night with a left-right combination to the chin to remain unbeaten in three professional fights.

Reid, 23, of Philadelphia, set the tone at the close of the first round of the six-round junior middleweight bout, knocking Long down with a right to the head just before the bell. Other bouts

-- NABF light heavyweight champion Merqui Sosa (30-5-2), 172 pounds, of New York knocked down Alex Umarov (17-4-1), 174, of Los Angeles with the first punch he threw and stopped him at 49 seconds of the fifth.

-- French heavyweight Christophe Mendy, 218 1/2, lost his first fight as a pro after five victories as little-known Val Smith (6-4), 206, of Charleroi, Pa., knocked him cold with a vicious left hook just 30 seconds into the four-round fight.

-- Kady King (12-2), 194 1/4, of Detroit knocked out Joel Humm (14-10-4), 194, of Syracuse at 2:08 of the third round in a six-round cruiserweight bout.

-- In the only woman's fight on the card, Mona Nelson, 180, Cookville, Texas, scored a unanimous decision over Syracuse's Amy Burton, 170, in a six-round light heavyweight bout. It was the first professional fight for both boxers.

-- The pro debut of Nigeria's Duncan Dokiwari, the bronze medalist in the superheavyweight division at Atlanta, was postponed when his opponent, Brian Nix of Rochester, N.Y., failed to show. James Baker of Washington, D.C., also had his pro debut canceled.
