Some Stars Will Be Missing From Second Senior Ball
Nesha Thomas, who led Federal Way to the Class AAA state girls basketball championship, heads the list of all-stars participating in the second Senior Ball Thursday at Decatur High School in Federal Way.
The girls game begins at 6 p.m., followed by the boys game at 8. Both pit seniors from King County against seniors from Pierce County. The event is sponsored by the Puget Sound Sports Council, which solicited nominations from area media. Invitations were then extended to the top seniors.
Noticeably absent is Ballard's Michael Johnson, Washington-bound state player of the year. He declined the invitation, according to Scott Lovely, executive director of the Puget Sound Sports Council.
Aaron Bellessa of Decatur, headed for Seattle Pacific, is unable to play because he participated in two all-star games at Renton High School in March. NCAA rules limit players to two all-star games before graduation. Auburn's Shaun Madsen, who also participated in the earlier all-star series, is able to play because he is not playing at an NCAA university next season. He is joined by teammate Leeroy Courville.
Bryan Brown of Mercer Island was expected to play for the King County boys but withdrew this week because of a baseball conflict. Teammate Diron Mobley is still on the roster.
Eastlake's Kim Sorenson and Brooke Ingalls, Redmond's Lauren Ashbaugh and Lake Washington's Shennae McNairy were late scratches because of a conflict with an awards' banquet. Sherita Apodaca of Foster and Nohe Ka of Kennedy were added to the King County team.
A three-point competition has been added. The boys compete at halftime of the girls game, and the girls shoot at halftime of the boys game. Six boys and six girls will participate.
Admission is $5.

New Sealth coach
David Pandt, 33, has been promoted to head football coach at Chief Sealth High School, replacing Walt Miller.
Pandt, who is a teacher-counselor at Sealth, played on the 1984 Montana State team that won the NCAA Division I-AA title. The team was coached by Dave Arnold, now a member of Dennis Erickson's Seattle Seahawk staff.
Sealth was 10-17 in Miller's three years as head coach. He was voted Sound Division coach of the year by his fellow coaches but Sealth administrators wanted to make a change.
Miller, a former banker who will continue teaching world history at Sealth, may join the football staff of a Highline District school.
Cascade pitcher picked
Rob Pugmire, a senior right-hander at Cascade High School in Everett, has been named Gatorade Circle of Champions Washington high-school baseball player of the year.
Pugmire was one of 46 student-athletes from 45 states and the District of Columbia to receive the award. He also is eligible to win the regional and national awards, which will be announced within a week.
Thirty of 46 state winners are pitchers.
Pugmire appeared in 12 games this season and pitched 58 2/3 innings, striking out 79 batters, walking 17 and allowing 23 hits and nine runs, only three earned. He had 9-0 record, 0.36 earned-run average one save.
