Northwest -- Husky Golfers Tie For Sixth In Pac-10 Championship
EUGENE, Ore. - Washington tied California for sixth place, the Huskies' best finish since 1991, in the Pac-10 men's golf tournament.
Arizona State won its third consecutive conference title yesterday, beating Oregon by 11 strokes at Eugene Country Club. The Sun Devils had a 72-hole team total of 1,445. Washington's total was 1,484.
Arizona State's Scott Johnson was the medalist. A final round of 4-under-par 68 gave him a 10-under 278 total and a five-stroke victory over teammate Chris Hanell and Stanford's Joel Kribel.
Darren Slackman led the Huskies, tying for 15th place at 293. The reigning Washington State Amateur champion's final-round 70 was the best by a Husky in the tournament.
Washington State finished last at 1,548, 59 behind ninth-place UCLA.
Palaki fights to draw
ROCHESTER - Boxer John John Palaki of Des Moines battled Miguel Arrozol to a 10-round draw at the Lucky Eagle Casino in Rochester, Thurston County. The judges scored the bout 97-94 for Palaki, 97-95 for Arrozol and 95-95.
Palaki (21-1-1) is the sixth-ranked junior lightweight by the International Boxing Commission. Arrozol, of the Philippines, is 40-8-1.
Earlier, heavyweight Mark Green of Seattle (4-1) earned a technical knockout 2:13 into the first round against Rich Maciel of Billings, Mont. Featherweight Sabino Rosario of Tacoma (2-3) won a unanimous decision over Leon Rivera of Mexico (0-1).
Husky sets baseball record
Washington sophomore Chris Magruder scored his 68th run of the season, setting a school record, in an 18-6 rout of St. Martin's in the Huskies' final game at Graves Field.
Ryan Soules drove in two runs in Washington's six-run first inning with a bases-loaded double. The Huskies (37-17) collected 22 hits.
Magruder, an outfielder from Yakima, scored his record-setting run on Soules' first-inning double. The old record of 67 was set in 1994 by Joe Trippy.
Brandon Irvine (1-0) picked up the win with two innings of relief.
UW splits in softball
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Shelley Beringhele's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted Oregon State to a 2-1 victory, its first against Washington, in a Pac-10 softball doubleheader. Washington won the second game 2-1.
The sixth-ranked Huskies (16-9 Pac-10, 45-15) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener when Leanne Rosser singled, stole second base and scored on a throwing error. The Beavers (6-15, 29-28-1) tied the score in the third inning on a home run by Tarrah Beyster.
Washington left the bases loaded in the sixth and 10th innings, and stranded two runners in the eighth and 11th.
In the second game, Jennifer Spediacci (14-4) and Jamie Graves combined on a two-hitter for UW, which scored on RBI singles by Eve Gaw in the fourth inning and Erin Helgeland in the sixth.
Washington hosts top-ranked Arizona at 1 p.m. Saturday in the final home game of the season.

-- Peter Newton of Bellevue finished with four gold medals in four events at the U.S. Canoe and Kayak time trials in Chula Vista, Calif. He teamed with Angel Perez of Miami to win the men's K-2 500-meter final and the K-2 1,000-meter final in the sprint team trials. Juraj Osusky of Seattle and Brian Rocheleau of Honolulu finished third in the 500 and second in the 1,000. In the women's K-2 500 final, Kathryn Colin and Tamara Jenkins of Seattle finished third. David Fort and Jordan Malloch of Seattle won the men's C-2 500 and 1,000 finals.
-- Melynda McNicol, a 5-foot-9 forward from Olympia High School, has signed a letter of intent to play for Western Washington's women's basketball team.
