Monroe Prison Escape Thwarted

MONROE - A man convicted of killing a police officer in Hawaii attempted to escape from the Washington State Reformatory but didn't get off the grounds, the prison superintendent said today.

Tony Williams scaled two containment fences and cut himself on razor wire on Sunday, Superintendent Ken DuCharme said.

Corrections officers warned Williams four times to stop, and one fired a warning shot. Two officers caught up with him and handcuffed him.

Williams now faces charges for attempted escape, but DuCharme said he doubts Williams will be prosecuted because his release date is not until 2511.

Williams was convicted of the 1987 murder of undercover officer Troy Barboza, who was investigating Williams for possible drug offenses. Barboza was shot three times in the head at a Manoa, Hawaii, apartment.
