Ex-Con Guilty Of Killing Five
COQUILLE, Ore. - An ex-convict was found guilty yesterday of stabbing to death five members of a family at a coastal trailer park in one of the worst mass killings in Oregon history.
Girley L. Crum Jr.'s attorneys had tried to convince the jury that one of the victims had killed the other four, including her two young children, near Bandon on the southern Oregon coast. Crum, 35, then killed the woman in self-defense, his attorneys argued.
The jury deliberated five hours before deciding Crum was guilty of five counts of aggravated murder.
Crum had dated one of the victims, Kelly Jacobs, 27, before she married, and had remained friends.
No motive was established, but District Attorney Paul Burgett said it was likely to come out during the penalty phase, scheduled to start today.
