Boys Games -- Mountlake Terrace: Drive To Playoffs Alive
MOUNTLAKE TERRACE - The Mountlake Terrace High School boys basketball team kept its postseason dreams alive last night with a dominating run that spanned two quarters to clinch a 56-47 Western AAA Conference victory over Cascade.
The two teams entered last night in a three-way tie for second place along with Edmonds-Woodway in the WesCo AAA South Division.
With the win and a few key losses, the Hawks (8-4, 9-5) are tied for first place in the South Division with Shorewood (8-4, 10-4), which lost to Kamiak last night. Oak Harbor beat Edmonds-Woodway (7-5, 9-5).
The Bruins, who led 37-35 at halftime, outscored the Hawks 11-6 to start the third quarter. Mountlake Terrace answered with a 16-0 run that began midway through the period and extended into the fourth quarter.
Trevor Tillman, a 6-foot-11 senior post, scored a game-high 20 points and had nine rebounds for the Hawks. Mountlake Terrace point guard Dennis DeSanctis scored 15 points and had seven assists.
Neil Mendez snared nine rebounds for the Hawks, who held a 39-31 rebounding edge for the game.
Royce Schmidt scored 18 points for Cascade (7-5, 8-5), and teammate Adam Snel had 13.

Mount Rainier 68, at Evergreen 67 (OT) - Brian Johnson hit two free throws with 10 seconds left in overtime to keep Mount Rainier, No. 7 in state AA, atop the Seamount League standings. Kyle Moore led Mount Rainier with 22 points and Johnson added 17 points. Evergreen had a chance to win, but Will Hicks' five-footer as time expired bounced out. Hicks and Mike Denevers led Evergreen (3-4, 8-5) with 15 points each. It was Evergreen's third overtime loss this season.
At Liberty 61, Lindbergh 59 (OT) - Gabe Orendorff scored the winning basket with nine seconds left on a driving layup down the middle of the key. The senior shooting guard scored eight of his team's nine points in overtime, including sinking all four of his free throws. Orendorff also had seven points in the fourth quarter and finished with 22 points.
Colby Nicholson, who led Lindbergh (0-7, 3-11) with 24 points, drove to the top of the key with one second left but lost the ball as time expired. Dean Warns added 21 for Lindbergh.
Mount Vernon 52, at Marysville-Pilchuck 31 - The Bulldogs stepped up the defensive pressure in the second half as the Tommies (1-12, 2-14) managed only 11 points after the break. Bulldog junior guard Scott Collins was five of six from the field and scored a game-high 16 points, including four three-pointers. Mount Vernon (13-0, 15-0) stretched its eight-point halftime lead to a 16-point cushion heading into the final period.
At Renton 73, Tyee 56 - Renton's Raleigh Fletcher and Tyee's Marcus Smith each scored 22 points, but Fletcher had more help. Tony Noel added 15 points and Arlen Williams 12 for Renton (6-1, 9-5). Tyee (2-5, 5-8) had no one else in double figures. Fletcher, a 6-4 sophomore center, made 11 of 12 shots and grabbed 14 rebounds.
At Mount Si 69, Kennedy 56 - Wildcat senior forward Mick Jacobsen scored a season-high 34 points, 13 in the fourth quarter. Jacobsen hit nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to help improve Mount Si to 3-4 in Seamount play and 5-9.
At Hazen 61, Highline 44 - Center Andrew Ayling scored a game-high 13 points for Hazen (6-1, 9-4), which led by only three points at halftime. Chad Walior and Blaine Stewart added 10 apiece for the Highlanders. Kory Lackey scored 12 points and Patrick Flynn 11 for Highline.
Kamiak 55, at Shorewood 49 - A late Shorewood surge cut Kamiak's 10-point lead to two with less than a minute to play, but the Knights had a steal late in the game to clinch the victory. Senior guard Joel Alinen paced Kamiak (5-6, 7-6) with 12 points, followed by Max Brown's 11. Senior Eric Thompson led the T-birds with 22 points.
At Oak Harbor 56, Edmonds-Woodway 51 - Brannon Stone and Steve Gordon dominated inside and combined for 42 points for Oak Harbor (6-6, 6-9). Stone, a 6-8 junior forward, scored a season-high 29 points, including 15 in the second half. Despite sinking only four of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter, Oak Harbor's zone defense secured the win. Mark Arington scored 18 for the Warriors (7-5, 9-5), who trailed by three points with two minutes left but sank only two shots in the final period.
At Auburn 77, Kentridge 61 - A strong third quarter helped launch the Trojans past the Chargers and stay undefeated in the SPSL North League. Auburn (9-0, 11-2) was led by the scoring tandem of point guard Leeroy Courville (24 points) and Shaun Madsen (19 points). Kentridge was led by Tony Martin's 15 points.
Kentwood 60, at Auburn Riverside 42 - The Conquerors went on a 24-4 run early on and won the SPSL game, 60-42. Rick Pettibone scored 12 points for Kentwood (7-3), who hit 12 of 15 free throws. Teammate Scott Meyer added eight. Erik Vann led all scorers with 20 points for the Ravens (0-10).
At Tahoma 57, Yelm 47 - The Bears never relinquished the lead in the Pierce County League game. Guy Robinson hit three three-pointers and scored 13 points for the Bears (5-5, 7-5). Steve Spears lead Yelm (0-10, 0-12) with 25 points, but was held to three points in the third quarter.
Shorecrest 44, at Mariner 43 - The score was tied at 38 at the end of regulation, and Chris Hammer gave Mariner the lead with a putback. The Scots answered with two free throws, but Tim Rambow hit a three-pointer to give the Marauders a one-point lead. With 17 seconds remaining, Mariner freshman Teyo Johnson was called for a charge. Shorecrest regained possession and senior forward Aaron Milner hit a layin to win the game. Johnson, who is among the leading scorers in WesCo AAA, finished with a game-high 21 points. Milner scored 10 points, and teammate Luke Russell had 15.
At Lynnwood 63, South Whidbey 62 (OT) - Trailing by one point with nine seconds remaining, senior Grady Smalling sank a put-back off a missed free throw to clinch the WesCo AA victory over South Whidbey (0-8, 0-12). Senior Jelani Guilmet paced Lynnwood (4-4, 5-7) with 18 points, and Falcon James Wrightson led all scorers with 19 points.
At Cedarcrest 55, Meadowdale 52 - The Red Wolves hit 11 of 12 free-throw attempts in the final quarter and hit three of four in the last 20 seconds. Seven Cedarcrest players scored in the fourth to give the Wolves their third consecutive league win. Meadowdale missed a last-second shot.
Jackson 51, at Stanwood 46 - Sophomore guard Nate Collord scored a game-high 26 points for the Timberwolves (7-1, 7-5), who used several key steals in the final four minutes to seal the victory. Erik Jaccard led Stanwood (4-4, 6-5) with 13 points
At King's 69, Sultan 59 - Graham Travis scored 21 points, Trevor Lubines had 16 and Brian Remington 14 as the Knights (5-0, 13-0) remained undefeated in the Cascade A League.
Tacoma Baptist 82, at King's West 58 - Senior Tyler Kuske scored 28 points as Tacoma Baptist rolled. The Warriors hit eight of 16 three-point attempts with Caleb Shanp sinking seven on his way to a 27-point game.
At Bush 45, Northwest 42 - After the Blazers fought back from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to close to within one, Bush's Alistair Schoonmaker stole the ball and converted to take a 43-42 lead. David Cohen iced the non-league game, converting two free throws. The Blazers (4-4, 9-7) were 11-12 from the free throw line in the fourth. Dhruva Mikkelsen led Bush with 15 points.
