Alliance Leaves Byu (13-1) Out

The Sunshine State got a rematch. Brigham Young got the shaft.

The Bowl Alliance selections yesterday left few surprises for college football fans after Saturday's shocker - Nebraska's loss to Texas in the Big 12 championship game.

Because of the Cornhusker loss, Florida (11-1) rose to No. 3 in the final regular-season rankings and a rematch against top-ranked Florida State (11-0) in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2.

The Seminoles beat the Gators 24-21 on Nov. 30. But a Florida victory in the Sugar Bowl, coupled with an Arizona State loss to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, could give the Gators a national title.

Nebraska (10-2) escaped with a berth in the Orange Bowl against Big East co-champion Virginia Tech (10-1). The Fiesta Bowl picked Penn State (10-2) to play Texas (8-4).

Overlooked: Brigham Young, 13-1 and ranked fifth in both major polls. BYU was the highest ranked finalist eligible for one of two at-large alliance slots.

Instead of going to an $8 million alliance game, the Cougars will play No. 14 Kansas State in the $2 million Cotton Bowl.

No. 8 Colorado (9-2) and No. 9 Tennessee (9-2) also went unchosen by the alliance.
