Rapist's Prison Sentence Upheld
The state Supreme Court has upheld the exceptional prison sentence for Edward Lee King, who was the real rapist in a case that sent an innocent man to prison in the 1980s.
King, who admitted at Western State Hospital that he committed as many as 50 rapes for which he was not prosecuted, had appealed his minimum prison term of nearly 31 years.
King claimed the rapes for which he was not prosecuted should not have been considered in determining his prison time.
King committed a rape for which Steve Titus, of Seattle, was initially convicted. Titus' conviction was overturned after a Seattle Times investigation showed Titus could not have committed the rape for which he was convicted. The stories led to a Pulitzer Prize for then-Times reporter Paul Henderson.
