----------------------------- The numbers and their sources -----------------------------
Ratings: A number of the columns have a figure followed by a numerical rating from 1 to 5 in parentheses. The ratings show where the school stands: A "1" indicates the school is in the top 20% of private schools in that category; a "2" indicates it's in the second 20%; and on to a "5," indicating the school is in the bottom 20% in that category.
Data sources: All figures are for 1995-96 school year unless otherwise noted. Rates calculated using enrollment figures submitted in October 1995 to the state. Most of the data come from two sources: school staff, and enrollment figures the schools report to the state superintendent's office.

Enroll in 4-year college: Schools' estimates, based on seniors in class of '95.
Reputation rating: Ten people, mainly college admissions officers and independent college counselors, rated schools' college-prep program from 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent). (Names of those surveyed, page 54.)
UW grades: The University of Washington keeps track of the grade-point averages students from each school earn in their first year at the UW. This number represents the average GPA of five years of freshmen from each school. (An A average is 4.0; the UW's average GPA for freshmen is 2.98.)
SAT/verbal, math mean: Caution: The number of students who take the Scholastic Assessment Test can greatly affect a school's score. In general, the fewer students who take the test, the higher the score, and vice versa. The highest possible score on each test is 800.
No. who took SAT: The number of students whose scores are used to calculate the school averages above.

Tuition and fees: For schools with a majority of students from one religious denomination, number reflects costs for members of that denomination. For other schools that report a range of tuition/fees, the estimate is the median of the range.
