Poulsbo's Shipley Wins National Kayaking Championship

Scott Shipley of Poulsbo rebounded from a disappointing finish in the Summer Olympics to win the men's kayaking singles in the Whitewater National Championships in Nashville, Tenn.

More than 150 paddlers competed yesterday in six Olympic classes on the Grizzly River Rampage water ride at Opryland Themepark.

Shipley, who won the nationals in 1995 and the Slalom World Cup in 1994, was the favorite in the Summer Games but finished 12th. Junior kayaker Scott Parsons finished second.

Cathy Hearn won the women's single competition, and teamed with Lecky Haller to win in mixed doubles canoe.

AUTO RACING

Randy LaJoie cut deeply into David Green's lead in the Busch Grand National series with a convincing victory in the MBNA 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware.

By winning for the fifth time this year, LaJoie reduced Green's lead from 128 to 57 points with three of 26 events remaining.

-- Angelle Seeling became the first woman to qualify No. 1 in Pro Stock Motorcycle history, covering a quarter-mile in an NHRA record 179.24 mph in the Keystone Nationals in Mohnton, Pa.

BASKETBALL

Marcus Bullard's college career ended Friday when a judge rebuffed his plea for leniency and sentenced the Mississippi State University star to three years in jail for violating probation.

Bullard had two years of NCAA eligibility remaining. The 21-year-old is accused of pistol-whipping another student. He violated the terms of his probation by possessing a weapon and failing to report to his probation officer, officials said.

CYCLING

Italian Nicola Minali won the eighth stage of the Tour of Spain, a 151-mile leg along Spain's southern coast from Marbella to Jerez de la Frontera.

SOCCER

Stacey Hampton assisted on both goals as the No. 19 North Carolina State women beat No. 10 Washington 2-1 at the Portland Invitational tournament.

Husky freshman Katey Ward of Tacoma scored her first collegiate goal, on an assist by Mercer Island's Erin Pochman.

-- Seattle University (6-0) scored the last three goals, beating Whitworth 3-1 in a women's game in Spokane.

-- Freshman forwards Dana Garner and Ryan Schaeffer each scored goals in their first starting assignments as the No. 15 Seattle Pacific men (3-3-0) beat Southern California College 3-0 at the Far West Classic in Chico, Calif.

VOLLEYBALL

Fifth-ranked Penn State defeated No. 6 Washington State in volleyball to win the championship of the Chicago Tribune Minuno USA Cup at McAuley High School in Alsip, south of Chicago. Penn State won 15-6, 15-8, 15-11, ending the Cougars' 24-game winning streak.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Washington men's team, whose highest finisher was freshman Chris Ledford in sixth, won the Pier Park Invitational in Portland with a team total of 49 points. Ledford, of Woodinville, covered the 7,600-meter course in 24 minutes, 7 seconds.

-- Washington junior Danelle Kabush outdistanced the field by more than 30 seconds, but the No. 16 Husky women's team placed second to host Portland at the Pier Park Invitational. Kabush completed the 5,650-meter course in 21:17.

-- Freshman Heather Wallace finished as the runner-up in her first collegiate race and paced Seattle Pacific to second place at the Humboldt State Preview meet in Arcata, Calif. Wallace finished the 5,000-meter course in 19:05, three seconds behind winner Kirsten Kabo of UC-Davis.

BOXING

Police questioned eight men - reportedly members of heavyweight champion Mike Tyson's entourage - after they allegedly beat a Manhattan parking lot attendant for putting a scratch on the bumper of their BMW.

The victim declined to file charges, police said.
