Rocking All Ages At Rkcndy
Not only is RKCNDY set to reopen, it is now the RK of ALL-AGES.
The Howell Street club gets grandly relit Saturday night with one of Seattle's most incendiary bands, TCHKUNG!. Also on the bill are Diamond Fist Werney and Redmond's U.N.
Under the new policy, live music shows will now be all ages. Dances - recorded music - will be 18 and up.
Although the massive renovations originally planned for RKCNDY have yet to take place, the club is fully functioning. Booker Lori LeFavor says the interior of the club will be repainted by next Friday's Mighty, Mighty Bosstones show. The outside, with repairs made and graffiti covered, will retain the RKCNDY look.
LeFavor, former producer at the club S.U.P., says all the permits are in order and the club is almost completely booked into November.
"I've actually had bands fighting over what night they're going to get," she said. "That in itself is pretty exciting." Shows already secured include Fun Loving Criminals, The Melvins, The Refreshments and Superdrag, Archers of Loaf, Gas Huffer and Bad Religion. Better Than Ezra, Seaweed, Poe, Weezer and Rocket From The Crypt are expected as well.
Saturday show time is 8 p.m., cover is $7.
-- The Crocodile Cafe will light up Sunday with the lava-lamp warmth of Combustible Edison. Tomorrow the frantic Butter 08 with Yuka and Miho of Cibo Matto are joined by Buffalo Daughter.
Mike Johnson plays the Croc Saturday with Peter Kreb's Golden Delicious.
-- The Wallflowers will be at Moe's Wednesday - that is, if the band can get out of storm-drenched North Carolina.
Head 'flower Jakob Dylan, son of Bob, called from the soggy state earlier this week. "Yeah, it's always weird when you look at the news and see this death and destruction and you suddenly realize `Hey, that's where I am!' Actually, it seems pretty nice today. I might take a walk."
The Wallflowers' debut release two years ago got almost as much attention for Dylan's famous dad as it did for the music, but that seems to be fading. The current hit single, "6th Avenue Heartache," helps.
"I tried not to pay attention to that. I just went about doing what I do. But it's nice having a hit. When we first booked this tour, that hadn't happened yet and now we're getting a lot more people in. But it's a lot of work. Everyone thinks you just play, but there's radio spots to do, interviews, the traveling, sound checks, and then you're supposed to put on this big exciting show. I try to sleep an hour or two beforehand. I barely have time to read. It's enough just trying to get fed. But I'm not complaining. Really, I'm happy to have the work.
"I just wish we had more ice." Tonight, the Unbridled Muzzle will make a just-booked appearance at Moe's.
-- The Central Tavern in Tacoma celebrates its second year Tuesday with a lineup featuring Poppa Wheelie and many, many more. There's no cover and things start at 6 p.m.
-- World Famous Irish fiddler Kevin Burke celebrates "Halfway to St. Patrick's Day" at The Owl 'N Thistle Tuesday. He's joined by the Owl 'N Thistle Band, and the special is corned beef and cabbage.
If that isn't enough Irish, the Tractor features Ireland's highly acclaimed traditionalists Dervish, also on Tuesday. Tonight it's local singer/songwriter Erin Corday, Sunday it's the Chic Street Man CD release, and Wednesday it's blues rocker Sleepy LaBeef.
-- Zakk Wylde is best known as former lead guitarist for Ozzy Osbourne. "It was a great experience," says Wylde, "but you can only do so much as a sideman. If you want the control, you have to do it all." Wylde is on his own now with the mostly acoustic album, "Book of Shadows." He plays tomorrow at The Backstage. Saturday the 'stage hosts a huge Harmonica Blowfest.
Ashley MacIsaac, the acclaimed Scottish performer who combines traditional music with rock - he recently appeared at Chateau Ste. Michelle with the Chieftains - plays Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Showbox. Tickets are $7 at TicketMaster.
