Spsl Football Capsules
Red Division
Auburn
Coach - Bob Jones, seventh year (42-20 record).
1995 record - 3-4 North Division (tied for fifth), 5-4 overall.
Top returning players - Shaun Madsen, WR, 6-5, 210, sr.; John Furth, QB/FS, 6-0, 160, sr.; Jason Hash, TE/OLB, 6-0,200, sr.; Bryce Strand, T/T, 6-2, 260, sr.; Jake Baker, TE/OLB, 6-1, 210, sr.; Mike Connelly, RB/LB, 5-8, 165, sr.
Key newcomers - Adam Stombaugh, WR/CB, 5-9, 170, sr.; David Lowe, WR/CB, 6-1, 190, sr.; Brian Tucci, G/T, 6-4, 280, sr.; Brent Harwood, C/T, 6-5, 280, sr; Kelly Brame, RB/DB, 5-9, 170, jr.
Outlook - Furth took over QB duties from Madsen late last season. Now he's a wide receiver who should be a primary target with Lowe. Connelly gets the early nod at RB. The Trojans, as usual, are big but have more speed than in the past, especially on defense. Inexperience could hurt early.
Decatur
Coach - Kent Rodseth, fourth year (7-20 record).
1995 record - 4-3 North Division (tied for third), 4-5 overall.
Top returning players - Victor Rogers, T/T, 6-7, 309, sr.; Kyle Hills, G/DE, 6-1, 240, sr.; Rusty Vinyard, C/T, 6-1, 230, sr.; David Smith, G/LB, 5-11, 25, sr.; Adrian Evans, TE/LB, 6-1, 185, sr.; Jason Estrada, QB/DB, 5-11, 175, sr.; Eric Anderson, WR/DB, 6-1, 165, sr.; Juan Davis, WR/LB, 6-1, 180, sr.; Robby Korn, RB/LB, 5-9, 155, sr.; Robert Dickson, OL/DL, 5-11, 195, sr.
Key newcomers - Marcus Mosby, RB/LB, 5-10, 180, sr.; Kyle Ruston, RB/LB, sr.; Adam Epperson, QB/DB, 5-9, 155, jr.; Nick Clark, RB/DB, 5-8, 170, jr.; Ed Rankin, WR/DB, 6-2, 175, jr.; L.C. Clark, RB/DB, 5-11, 170, soph.; Kevin Louwsma, T/DE, 6-4, 225, soph.; Wes Nurse, QB/DB, 5-10, 165, soph.
Outlook - Rogers and Hills are top-notch linemen and will anchor a group that is big and mobile. With Estrada stepping in at QB, and WR Lewis Dawson stepping out (he's at Notre Dame), Gators will rely more on running game with Mosby and the two Clarks sharing the early load. Rankin, who didn't play football last year, should make some big catches.
Kentridge
Coach - Marty Osborn, sixth year (24-22 record).
1995 record - 3-4 North Division (tied for fifth), 3-6 overall.
Top returning players - Imani Dupree, WR/DB, 6-0, 160, sr.; James Eastman, OL/DL, 6-7, 285, sr.; Steven Fenton, WR/DB, 6-3, 185, sr.; Matt Griffith, OL/DL, 6-7, 285, sr.; Tyler Hayne, LB, 5-11, 190, sr.; Nate Mallory, RB/DE, 6-3, 235, sr.; Andy Linscott, QB/DB, 6-0, 165, jr.; Ben Olson, OL/DL, 6-3, 355, jr.; Chris Jackson, TE/LB, 6-3, 255, jr.
Key newcomers - Eric Pollard, FB, 5-10, 175, sr.; Keegan Dougherty, RB/CB, 5-11, 185, jr.; Shaundell Jackson, FB/DB, 5-10, 160, jr.; Derrick Roche, OL/DL, 6-5, 210, jr.; Jamie Taylor, RB/LB, 6-1, 215; Kyle Stewart, OL/DL, 6-3, 275, soph.
Outlook - Year of the Charger? Could be. Nine starters return, including three on a mammoth front line. Linscott can throw and has talented targets in Dupree and Fenton. Jackson and Mallory are quick and athletic. Kentridge must be physical up front, control the line of scrimmage and win close ones.
Rogers
Coach - Steve Gervais, second year (8-2 record).
1995 record - 6-1 South Division (tied for first), 8-2 overall; lost to Sehome in opening round of state playoffs.
Top returning players - Marcus Pitts, WR/CB, 5-11, 170, sr.; Matt Safranek, C/T, 6-5, 265, sr.; Kyle Hash, T/DE, 6-3, 230, sr.; Trevor Roberts, G/T, 6-1, 230, sr.; Jeremy Braithwaite, RB/LB, 5-10, 180, sr.; Sean O'Brien, SB/S, 6-0, 175, sr.; Kenneth Authier, RB/CB, 5-10, 180, jr.
Key newcomers - Chong Sinn G/DE, 6-0, 230, jr.; Jason Johnson, QB, 6-2, 180, jr.; Jason Anderson, RB/LB, 6-1, 190, sr.; Derick Dillion, WR/CB, 6-1, 175, jr.; Forrest Lawson, SB/LB, 6-0, 175, soph.; Mike Tangataevaha, T/T, 5-10, 235, soph.
Outlook - Johnson, grandson of PLU Coach Frosty Westering, is expected to be a good one and Rams have three quality RBs in Braithwaite, Anderson and Authier. Good quickness, but not much depth or overall experience. Gervais is a proven winner and should have Rogers in hunt for another title.
Spanaway Lake
Coach - John Robak, second year (1-8 record).
1995 record - 0-7 South Division (eighth), 1-8 overall.
Top returning players - Steve Arnett, QB, 6-0, 170, sr.; Tony Tanhueco, WR/DB, 5-9, 150, sr.; Matt Esquival, OL/DL, 6-1, 220, sr.; Vann Starr, OL/DL, 6-0, 250; Shaun Smith, RB, 5-10, 175, jr.; Robert Erechar, LB, 5-11, 200, jr.; Quentin Rector, DB, 5-10, 185, jr.; Heinz Togafo, DB, 5-10, 180, jr.
Key newcomers - Nick Adrian, OL/DL, 6-3, 250, sr.; Devin Spencer, RB/DB 6-0, 175, jr.; Charles Leon Guerrero, DB, 5-10, 170, jr.; Warren Stewart, TE/LB, 6-2, 200, soph.
Outlook - Arnett and Smith paid their dues last season and Spencer should provide backfield help. But Sentinels are young up front and might need time to gel. Robak says enthusiasm is high, but must stay that way through adversity.
Sumner
Coach - Andy Haynie, first year.
1995 record - 4-3 South Division (tied for third), 4-5 overall.
Top returning players - Adam Chambers, G/DE, 6-2, 240, sr.; Troy Russell, T/T, 6-3, 235, sr.; Joe Kobes, TE/DE, 6-2, 200, sr.; Ryan Harwood, ILB, 5-8, 175, sr.; Von Moroz, QB, 5-9, 160, jr.; Eric Williams, T/T, 6-1, 230, jr.
Key newcomers - Nick Wambach, RB/DB, 6-0, 175, sr.; Chris Devela, OLB, 5-8, 135, sr.; Chris Johnson, G/LB, 6-2, 190, jr.; Nyle Chambers, TB/ILB, 6-0, 190, soph.; Carl Pullen, SE/FS, 6-1, 180, soph.
Outlook - Mike Hagadone jumped to Enumclaw, but Haynie hopes to work the same magic he did at Tyee, where he turned a losing program around. He has some good linemen and an experienced QB in Moroz. Look for a ball-control offense that tries to pound it out. Must play sound defense.
White Division
Auburn Riverside
Coach - Mike Merrill, second year (1-8 record).
1995 record - 1-5 Pierce County League Shore Division (sixth), 1-8 overall.
Top returning players - Doug Granquist, G/OLB, 5-10, 175, sr.; Mateo Ramos, QB/DE, 6-0, 180, sr.; Phillipe Montanez, WR/DB, 5-11, 170, sr.; Robbie Ellis, RB, 5-8, 170, jr.; Matt Cole, QB/DB, 6-0, 170, jr.; Ean Thompson, RB/OLB, 5-9, 165, jr.; Aaron Bjornberg, T/T, 5-10, 220, jr.; Brian Armstrong, G/LB, 5-10, 220, jr.; Brett Thompson, TE/LB, 5-11, 200, soph.
Key newcomers - Dan Spencer, C/DE, 6-2, 210, sr.; Bihn Nguyen, RB/DB, 5-8, 140, jr.; Greg Mollichi, RB/DB, 5-8, 160, jr.
Outlook - Ravens probably are biggest unknown in revamped league. Riverside was a new school with no seniors in 1995. Ravens are bound to be better, but how much? They got their feet wet against AA competition and gave up a lot of points.
Clover Park
Coach - Eric Kurle, third year (3-15 record).
1995 record - 2-5 South Division (tied for sixth), 2-7 overall.
Top returning players - Jason Niloloa, TE/T, 6-3, 285, sr.; Mark Leazer, WR/DB, 6-2, 170, sr.; Wayne Davis, G/LB. 5-10, 185, sr.; Autasia Faasoa, C/T, 6-0, 260, sr.; Aaron Williams, T/LB, 5-20, 225, sr. Jordan Rasmussen, RB/LB, 5-9, 185, sr.; Quentin Johnson, RB/DE, 6-0, 220, sr.; Jermine Poole, WR/DB, 6-2, 170, sr.; Shaun Claiborne, FB/T, 5-10, 285, jr.; Beau Yotty, QB, 6-0, 185, jr.; Mike Jones, WR/DB, 6-0, 160, jr.
Key newcomers - Dion Coleman, RB/LB, 6-2, 195, sr.; Phil Kirkland, DE, 6-2, 180, sr.
Outlook - Clover Park could be the surprise of the SPSL. Nine starters return and all but one play both ways. The defensive line is big and athletic, but there's not much depth on offense. If Warriors get some early success, they could be in playoff contention.
Curtis
Coach - Bob Lucey, 21st year.
1995 record - 6-1 South Division (first), 13-1 overall; won state championship.
Top returning players - Elijah Baker, RB/FS, 5-8, 175, sr.; Terry Tharps, SE/CB, 5-11, 175, sr.; Matt Salzman, QB, 5-11, 175, sr.; Jake Sampson, RB/OLB, 5-9, 175, sr.; Charlie Engelmann, RB/CB, 5-9, 175, sr.; Justin Corley, TE/DE, 6-1, 180, sr.; Nick Lentz, P/K, 5-11, 165, sr.; Ronny Griffin, WR/CB, 5-11, 165, sr.; David Baker, FL, CB, 5-10, 165, jr.
Key newcomers - Justin Fisher, OG, 6-3, 255, sr.; David Godby, OT, 6-4, 275, sr.; Paul Dunaway, LB, 5-10, 185, sr.; Drew Voss, C, 6-0, 185, jr.; Derrick Pahulu, LB, 5-9, 200, jr.
Outlook - Another division title for Vikings? How about another state title? Several key cogs from last year's machine return, most notably uncatchable Elijah Baker. He's one of several Curtis players with 4.5 speed or better. But offensive line is rebuilt and there is less overall experience than last season.
Jefferson
Coach - Buddy Bland, third year (3-15 record).
1995 record - 0-7 North Division (eighth), 2-7 overall.
Top returning players - Ernie Brock, DL, 6-1, 230, sr.; Eric Bruun, OT, 6-2, 240, sr.; Joe Chung, RB, 5-11, 190, sr.; Jeremy Franklin, WR/LB, 6-0, 175, sr.; Nick Holcomb, DE, 6-0, 190, sr.; Josh Hopper, OL, 6-0, 215, sr.; Jamar Jones, WR/LB, 6-1, 175, sr.; Andy Passic, OG, 6-2, 250, sr.; Bruce Rogers, C, 6-0, 220, sr.; Tom Young, T/T, 6-4, 210, sr.; Jared Smith, FB/DL, 5-11, 240, jr.; Zach Taler, QB/DB, 6-0, 185, jr.
Key newcomers - Leon Adams, WR/DB, 6-0, 175, sr.; Justin Witter, WR/DB/P/K, 6-2, 175, sr.; Sean Baik, RB, 5-10, 185, sr.; Justin Buckner, TE, 6-2, 225, jr.; Paul Rosquita, LB, 5-11, 210, jr.; Mike Washington, LB, 5-10, 165, jr.
Outlook - Hopes are high at Jefferson, which returns its entire offensive and defensive lines. Raiders expect to have a much-improve kicking game with Witter working hard in the offseason. Bland emphasizes execution and holding onto the football.
Kent-Meridian
Coach - Bruce Rick, eighth year (32-34 record).
1995 record - 5-2 North Division (second), 5-5 overall; lost to Curtis in preliminary playoff game.
Top returning players - Andre Sims, WR/DB, 5-11, 167, sr.; Chris Samms, QB/LB/P, 6-1, 183, sr.; Lee Thomas, RB/LB, 5-11, 193, sr.; Scott Fowler, TE/DE, 6-2, 211, sr.; Richard Zeller, C/LB, 6-2, 216, sr.; Micah Adams, WR/LB, 5-8, 147, sr.; Nic Seay, WR/DB, 5-9, 138, sr.; Rashad Lee, RB/DE, 5-9, 170, sr.; Kyle Nelson, T/T, 6-3, 230, sr.; Flynn Cocran, QB/DB, 5-11, 157, jr.; James Smith, WR/DB/K, 5-7, 141, jr.; Ryan Armstrong, WR/LB, 5-10, 162, jr.
Key newcomers - Anthony Kelly, G/LB, 5-10, 194, sr.; Jeromy Scott, RB/DB, 5-9, 153, sr.; Peter Hildebrand, T/T, 6-0, 259, jr.; Jason Webster, WR/DB, 5-11, 198, jr.
Outlook - With six players running 4.5 or better in the 40-yard dash, Royals hope to speed back into playoffs. Samms is in third year as starting QB and has prime receiving targets in Sims, Fowler and Adams. Thomas should be a factor on both sides of ball. With lack of depth, injuries could be devastating.
Puyallup
Coach - Mike Huard, 16th year (118-36 record).
1995 record - 4-3 South Division (tied for third), 6-3 overall.
Top returning players - Randy Haxton, G/NG, 6-0, 253, sr.; Matt Reding, G/DE, 6-0, 195, sr.; John Resseau, FB/LB, 5-0, 183, sr.; Nolan St. Martin, C, 5-10, 212, sr.; Matt Christensen, LB, 6-2, 205, sr.; Luke Huard, QB, 6-4, 218, jr.; Jesse Looker, WR/DB, 5-10, 169, jr.
Key newcomers - Adam Clinton, G/DE, 6-0, 188, sr.; David Emerson, NG, 5-8, 177, sr.; Josh Kissner, WR/CB, 6-0, 158, sr.; Mike Mountford, T/NG, 5-9, 215, sr.; Kyle O'Hagan, WR/CB, 5-8, 165, sr.; Josh Stokes, TE/T, 6-0, 255, sr.; Jake Williams, FB/LB, 5-8, 158, sr.; Jeff Wix, TB,LB, 5-8, 170, sr.; Todd Elstrom, WR/DB, 6-2, 183, jr.; Jeremy Swann, TB/DB, 5-7, 145, jr.
Outlook - Vikings are laying it on the line - their success might rest largely on a rebuilt offensive front. Huard is a proven passer but needs protection and a solid running game. Should contend as usual.
White Division
Bethel
Coach - Bill Wernofsky, first year.
1995 record - 2-5 South Division (tied for sixth), 4-5 overall.
Top returning players - Mike Unsell, RB/OLB, 5-8, 180, sr.; Gerrin Inman, OL/ILB, 5-11, 190, sr.; Chris Larson, OL/DL, 6-0, 200, sr.; Rick Browse, OL/DL, 6-2, 200, sr.; Chris Belser, WR/DB, 6-0, 160, jr.
Key newcomers - Chad Vosler, TE/OLB, 6-6, 210, sr.; Dan Gall, QB/DB, 6-1, 185, jr.; John Turner, WR/DB, 5-8, 160, jr.; Byron Burris, OL/DL, 6-3, 225, jr.; Jeff Grover, RB/LB, 5-10, 170, jr.
Outlook - Wernofsky is no newcomer to the SPSL. He was line coach at Puyallup the past eight years. Look for a spread offense (a la Puyallup) and steady improvement - especially if Braves develop early confidence. Depth is a question mark.
Enumclaw
Coach - Mike Hagadone, first year.
1995 record - 6-1 North Division (first); 7-3 overall; lost to South Kitsap in first round of state playoffs.
Top returning players - Cady Olson, HB/DB, 5-10, 175, sr.; Casey Olson, FB/LB, 5-10, 185, sr.; Jason Patterson, QB/DB, 5-11, 160, sr.; Roger Sherwood, TE/LB, 6-1, 200, sr.; Bob Adsero, T/T, 6-2, 265, sr.; Jason Breidenbach, G/DE, 6-3, 195, sr.; Rolf Johannessen, RB/LB, 5-8, 160, sr.; Andy Kuzaro, HB/DB, 6-0, 180, jr.
Key newcomers - Jason Anglin, QB/WR/DB, 6-1, 170, sr.; Joey Hollenbeck, T/T, 6-4, 270, jr.; Jeremiah Mills, G/LB, 5-10, 170, jr.; Seth Loop, WR/DB, 6-2, 180, jr.
Outlook - Olson twins were a pair of handfuls last season, and are back for more. But in Hagadone's wing-T offense, they'll share the ball more with QB Patterson and Kuzaro. Hornets hope to add some sting with a short passing game. With eight or nine players going both ways, they can't afford injuries.
Federal Way
Coach - Tom McConnaughey, ninth year (28-45 record).
1995 record - 3-4 North Division (tied for fifth), 4-5 overall.
Top returning players - Luke Nevin, QB/FS, 5-10, 155, sr.; Tom Priestman, T/T, 6-3, 370, sr.; Tom Records, G/T, 6-2, 250, sr.; Ramey Walther, WR/DB, 6-2, 180, sr.; Pete Bradshaw, WR/DB, 5-5, 150, sr.; David Runkel, C/OLB, 5-10, 180, sr.; Brett Sanderson, G/OLB, 5-11, 180, sr.; Dusty Richardson, WR/K, 5-11, 170, sr.; John McClary, FB/ILB, 6-0, 190, jr.
Key newcomers - Jared Haynes, RB/DB, 5-10, 160, sr.; Garridon Grady, FB/ILB, 6-1, 215, jr.; C.J. Bullock, FB/NG, 5-11, 200, soph.; Tyler Howell, TE/OLB, 6-2, 220, soph.; Jerode Ramsey, QB/RB, 5-10, 180, soph.
Outlook - Patience is the watchword at Federal Way this season. The Eagles won't be as explosive on offense as they were last year, but McConnaughey hopes for more consistency. This group might not be as athletic as last year's, but has displayed better work ethic and could surprise some.
Kentwood
Coach - Tom Ingles, seventh year (39-20 record).
1995 record - 4-3 North Division (tied for third), 5-4 overall.
Top returning players - Heath Bryant, TE/OLB, 6-3, 207, sr.; Ryan Peterson, FB/OLB, 6-1, 220, sr.; Zach Longland, OL/NG, 6-0, 270, sr.; Aron Palady, T/ILB, 5-10, 175, sr.; Kendall Anderson, C/D, 5-10, 185, sr.; Josh Hall, TB/FS, 6-0, 180, sr.; Dave Graf, T/T, 6-1, 205, jr.
Key newcomers - Matt Moses, SE/CB, 5-7, 155, sr.; Bobby Jones, SE/CB, 5-9, 160, jr.; Matt Alvis, QB, 5-10, 170, jr.; James Smiley, TE/LB, 6-1, 185, jr.; James Hougardy, OL/T, 6-0, 215, jr.; Ryan Goodwin, WR/S, 6-0, 170, jr.; Josh Klopfer, FL/OLB, 6-1, 180, jr.; Darvel Hanson, QB, 6-1, 180, soph.
Outlook - Conquerors lost a lot to graduation, but Ingles hopes to have another contender. Hall showed his stuff last season and should get help from a promising passing game. Alvis quaterbacked the JV championship team and has a bevy of talented receivers. Inexperience in the defensive line is a concern.
Lakes
Coach - Dick Zatkovich, 13th year (84-37 record).
1995 record - 4-3 South Division (tied for third), 4-5 overall (including two forfeit losses).
Top returning players - Drew Miller, QB, 6-1, 185, sr.; Chris Mitchell, T/DE, 6-3, 220, sr.; Francis Hyke, T/T, 6-0, 230, sr.; Michael Westbrook, WR/DB, 5-9, 165, jr.; Alex Rivera, T/T, 6-1, 230, jr.; Jeremy Jacobs, WR/OLB, 6-2, 180, jr.; John Hunn, C/LB, 6-0, 200, jr.; Darryl Hill, 5-9, 175, jr.; Arhman Holman, G/DE, 6-0, 200, jr.
Key newcomers - Bill Bjorke, WR, 5-10, 160, sr.; Anthony Fuertes, G/T, 6-4, 275, sr.; Nick Walker, WR/FS, 5-10, 175, sr.; Ron Davis, G/DE, 6-0, 220, sr.; Marcus Thomas, RB/SS, 6-2, 185, jr.; Brian Bennett, RB/LB, 6-0, 180, soph.
Outlook - Zatkovich promises an improved running game with Hill getting plenty of carries, then states the obvious: The favored Lancers will pass, pass, pass. Miller smashed all sorts of records last season and is back for more. Depth and inexperience are questionable. Seven to eight underclassman will start on each side of the ball.
