Man Dying Who Used Aids To Kill

SALEM - Alberto Gonzalez, the first man convicted in the United States of attempted murder for having unprotected sex while he knew he was carrying the AIDS virus, is dying.

Gonzalez, 33, of Amity, was in critical condition last night at Salem Hospital, according to Perrin Damon, spokeswoman for the state Department of Corrections.

Gonzalez was convicted in 1992 of attempted murder for trying to infect a 17-year-old girl with the AIDS virus.

Prosecutors said Gonzalez was angry about having the virus. A jury decided he had tried to use AIDS as a weapon.

The teenage victim has tested negative for the virus since then.

Gonzalez was sentenced in 1992 to nearly 9 1/2 years in prison.

One of Gonzalez' former girlfriends, Shawn Hop, died of AIDS in 1992. The other, Bridgett Pederson, has tested positive for the

virus.
