Mall Shooting Victim Dies

DEPTFORD, N.J. - A mall shootout between bank robbers and a guard has claimed a third life: a 15-year-old girl who was hit in the head by a ricocheting bullet while shopping for school.

Maureen Lavin died yesterday, two days after the gunfight at the Deptford Mall, about 10 miles from Philadelphia.

Another bystander, Nicholas Morris, 17, was killed at the scene after pushing his sister to safety. One of the robbers, Vincent Reid, 28, was shot to death as he tried to flee with a bag of money from the MidLantic Bank, police said.

Rudolph Matlack, 22, an armored-car guard, was in stable condition with gunshot wounds.

Maureen's friends said she will be greatly missed.

"To have 25 Maureens in the room would have been a joy," said Anthony Petruzelli, her eighth-grade social-studies teacher.

A car similar to the one driven by Reid was found yesterday, and authorities say at least two suspects were being sought.

"We've got some leads," prosecutor Harris Cotton said. "We got a couple of names we're not ready to reveal."
