-- Dennis Rodman, the NBA's leading rebounder perhaps more famous for his outrageous statements and fashion, agreed to a one-year contract with the Chicago Bulls early today, his agent said.

"He's ecstatic to be back in Chicago," Dwight Manley said. "Both sides compromised and both sides are very happy."

Manley would not provide additional contract terms, but said the deal was worth significantly more than the $6 million the NBA champions had been offering last month.

Rodman, 35, had negotiated with the Lakers until last month, but lost his leverage when Los Angeles signed Shaquille O'Neal to a $120 million deal.

-- Frank Brickowski doesn't mind being called a journeyman as long as his journeys keep him in the NBA. "There weren't a lot of teams out there offering me a position," the free-agent center said after signing with Boston for one year and a reported $1.7 million.

Brickowski, who will be 37 when next season starts, joined the NBA with the Seattle SuperSonics in 1984, then made six other stops in the league before returning to Seattle for an NBA Finals run last season.

Redmond's Rick Fehr shot an 8-under-par 64 for a one-stroke lead over Justin Leonard and Jim Carter in the Buick Open at Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich.

-- Karrie Webb, the rookie sensation from Australia, sank a 45-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish a 7-under 65 that gave her a three-stroke lead after the first round of the du Maurier Classic in Edmonton, Alberta. Hall of Famer Nancy Lopez had second to herself before a bogey at 18 tied her with Barb Mucha, who closed with four birdies on the back nine.

-- Scott Johnson of Kennewick fired a 1-under 71 for a five-stroke lead going into the final round of the 30th Pacific Coast Amateur Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Club in Pebble Beach, Calif.

Boxing

New York's athletic commission has brought charges against management for boxers Riddick Bowe and Andrew Golota for their part in a Madison Square Garden brawl following a July 11 fight.

The commission also is holding $1 million of Bowe's $5 million paycheck because of the actions of his manager, Rock Newman, commission spokeswoman Gwenn Lee said today.

The boxing licenses of Newman's company, Spencer Promotions, Inc., and Golota's manager, Lou Duva, were temporarily suspended in New York state, she said.

-- Five years after he retired for the third time, Sugar Ray Leonard is thinking about fighting again. And he has an opponent picked out - Hector "Macho" Camacho. Leonard said he had a "verbal proposal from Camacho's people, but nothing is definite."

Leonard suffered a detached retina in 1981 and has not fought since losing a 12-round decision to Terry Norris on Feb. 9, 1991.
