Hats Off

Explorers from Redmond Police Explorer Post 913 attended the 1996 National Law Enforcement Explorer Conference last month in Flagstaff, Ariz. Explorers in attendance were Jason Lovell, Matt Williams, Erik Scairpon, Koleen Bunten, Dayton Eddy, Jeremy Crawford, Alan LaBissoniere, Paul Gordon, and William Jones. They were accompanied by their advisers, Officer Anne Malins and Detective Charlie Gorman. The team of Lovell, Williams and Scairpon took first place in the hostage-negotiations competition.

Steven Singer of Woodinville was installed as the 1996-97 president of the Washington State Pharmacists Association during its annual convention in June. Singer is a graduate of the University of Washington School of Pharmacy and vice president of operations of Kirkland-based Evergreen Pharmaceutical Services.

The Humane Society and SPCA of Seattle/King County has announced its officers for 1996-97. Newly elected Eastsiders are Jerome Roache of Bellevue, vice president; Terry Albert of Issaquah, secretary; Cynthia Petrie of Mercer Island, treasurer; Bob Bigelow of Bothell, board member; and Marie Booker of Bellevue, board member.

Michelle Rutledge of Fall City was chosen as a state finalist in the Miss Washington American Princess Pageant.

Jennifer Kasemeier of Kirkland was selected as a finalist in the 1996 Miss Teen of Washington Scholarship and Recognition Program.

announced the judges' selections for the 1996 Spring Into Writing event. They were:

-- Kindergarten: Lisa Stanislawski, East Ridge Elementary.

-- First grade: James Merrill, Norman Rockwell Elementary, and Brendan O'Neill.

-- Second grade: Hans Stroo, Riverview Elementary.

-- Third grade: Tony Cole, Ben Rush Elementary; Evelyn Jurgens, Audubon Elementary; Amy Louie, Emily Dickinson Elementary; and Nathan O'Neill.

-- Fourth grade: Maura Corroone, Hollywood Hills Elementary.

-- Fifth grade: Nellie Barash and Joanna Beard, Overlake School; and Noelle Tanner, Norman Rockwell Elementary.

-- Sixth grade: Kristin Irvine, Ben Franklin Elementary, and Lena Jurgens, Audubon Elementary.

-- Seventh grade: Clare Corroone, Northshore Junior High; April O'Neill; John Paul Schnapper-Casteras, Lakeside School; and Cameron Crawford, Kirkland Junior High.

Several students in the Bellevue Community College chapter of Delta Epsilon Chi won awards at the National Career Development Conference in Orlando, Fla. Some finalists were: Dana Corbett, first place, entrepreneurship; Tiburon Olmstead, second place, ad campaign; and Ryan Ackley, third place, fashion merchandising promotion plan. Placing in the top 10 were: Angi Redd and Susanne Sandin, membership promotion plan; Natalie Sears, sales promotion plan; and Rasa Terhanian, entrepreneurship.

Two scholarship winners at Bellevue Community College were announced. Suanne Carlson won the Association Classified Scholarship, and Billy Morelli was named to the Ronald McNair Scholars Program.

Students in the Radiologic Technology Program at Bellevue Community College won several awards. They were: Deanne Pascoe, Washington Society of Radiologic Technologists, Outstanding Student in Washington in Radiologic Technology; Scott Coplen, Seattle Chapter of WRST Scholarship; Debby Hayward and Heather Lyon, Virginia Mason Medical Center Larry McCoy Memorial Scholarship; and Larry Juel, Mallincrodt Award, the highest academic award.
