Tyson Ill; Seldon Fight Postponed
Two days after proclaiming himself in good health and ready to fight, Mike Tyson was on the shelf with a case of viral bronchitis, forcing the WBC heavyweight champion to postpone his July 13 bout with WBA champion Bruce Seldon.
At a hastily called news conference that Tyson did not attend yesterday at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, Dr. Robert Voy said Tyson had been suffering from bronchitis for the past two weeks.
Voy said he decided Tuesday night that Tyson was not healthy enough to fight.
"He's been under treatment, his progress has been very slow and he's been unable to train, essentially because of the bronchitis," said Voy, who has worked with Tyson since the fighter's amateur days.
"He is recovering, but has not recovered fully enough for him to be 100 percent. I don't think he would be ready for a heavyweight championship bout in the next 10 days."
Promoter Don King said Tyson would fight Seldon sometime in September or October.
The target date appears to be Sept. 7, which still would allow time for Tyson to fight former champ Evander Holyfield in November.
This is Tyson's second postponement since he was relased from prison. He also canceled a fight with Holyfield, saying he had a rib
injury.
