Fire At Georgetown Landmark
Seattle firefighters put out a small blaze yesterday at the historic Rainier Cold Storage and Ice building in the Georgetown neighborhood.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but officials pinpointed the origin to a stack of cardboard and other packing materials in the mezzanine. Seaport Fisheries Inc., a seafood-processing company, leases the north end of the 89-year-old building where the fire started.
Rainier Cold Storage and Ice, at 6004 Airport Way S., was the site of a much more destructive fire in November 1988. The owners sued the city, but a jury found that the owners were to blame because of poor maintenance.
