Agent Says Payton Concerned Over His Sister's Well-Being
The agent for Gary Payton confirmed that the oldest sister of the Seattle SuperSonic point guard recently was involved in a life-and-death situation.
Aaron Goodwin, Payton's Oakland-based representative and childhood friend, said Sharon Payton was involved in a serious incident on Wednesday.
Goodwin would not elaborate, and Payton has declined to comment.
"It's true that something's going on," Goodwin said, "but Gary makes no excuses."
Payton had just 10 points during the Sonics' 118-83 loss in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals in Salt Lake City Thursday night. It was his lowest scoring total since he had 10 during Seattle's Game 2 loss to Sacramento in the first round. He took just seven shots.
Utah's John Stockton had personal series highs of 14 points and 12 assists in what turned out to be the most physical, vocal and feisty series confrontation between the star guards.
Payton was whistled for a technical foul, and seemed unable to get into the flow of the game. Goodwin believes Payton's concern about the family matter distracted him.
"I believe that was the case," he said. "But Gary doesn't."
