Seahawks Sign Punter Who Led Cfl Last Season

The Seahawks today signed Josh Miller, a two-time All-Canadian Football League punter.

Miller punted the past two seasons for the Baltimore Stallions of the CFL.

Last year, he led the league with an average of 47.7 gross yards and an average net of 42.2 yards on 118 punts.

Miller is a native of East Brunswick, N.J., and played at Arizona.

The Seahawks have been unable to sign Rick Tuten, but Tuten said today he remains interested in returning to the Hawks for a sixth season.

The other punter on the Seahawk roster is Marc Collins, an undrafted rookie from Eastern Kentucky.

BASKETBALL

Magic Johnson's agent, Lon Rosen, told The Associated Press today that at least three foreign teams - two in Italy and one in Argentina - have expressed interest in his client.

Johnson, who will turn 37 in August, announced his retirement from the NBA earlier this month.

-- The Charlotte Hornets are expected to announce tomorrow that Dave Cowens will be their head coach. The Hall-of-Fame center, an assistant with the Spurs, would replace Allen Bristow, who was fired on April 23 after the team failed to make the playoffs with a 41-41 record.

GOLF

Kelli Kamimura of Burlington set a women's course record with a 3-under-par 68 for a two-stroke victory in the AJGA Girls Junior Championship in Tucson, Ariz.

"I'm in shock right now," said Kamimura, who had a 5-over 218 total. "My goal was to finish in the top 10. I was going to be happy with a round of 74. I never dreamed of shooting in the 60s."

-- Costantino Rocca of Italy fought off a final-round charge by Nick Faldo with a 69 to win the Volvo PGA by two strokes in Virginia Water, England.

Rocca birdied the final two holes to finish at 274, 14 under par, for his first victory in three years. Faldo finished with a 68 to tie for second place with Scotland's Paul Lawrie.

CYCLING

Enrico Zaina broke away on the final uphill stretch and scored a four-second victory in the ninth stage of the Tour of Italy. Davide Rebellin, who finished fourth in the stage, kept the overall lead.

Zaina completed the 110.4 miles from Naples to Fiuggi in 4 hours, 24 minutes, 48 seconds, at an average speed of 25.849 mph.

AUTO RACING

A day after winning the Indianapolis 500, Buddy Lazier received a check for $1.37 million from a purse of $8.1 million, the richest prize package in the history of the sport.

Davy Jones, the runner-up who finished less than one second behind, received $632,503. Third-place Richie Hearn, the only other driver to finish all 200 laps, earned $375,203, the fourth-highest payoff to a rookie.

Pole-sitter Tony Stewart, selected rookie of the year, took home $222,053 for finishing 24th.

Carlos Queiroz has been hired as coach of Major League Soccer's New York-New Jersey MetroStars.

FOOTBALL

Tony Vinson set a World League record with 211 yards rushing as the London Monarchs beat the Amsterdam Admirals 16-13 to stay alive in the quest for a World Bowl berth.
