Prep Basketball / Wesco All-Star Games -- Three Sehome Players On Roster -- Wesco's Best Play Saturday
Three players from Class AAA boys basketball state champion Sehome will participate in the second annual AAU/Nike WesCo Basketball Classic.
The Classic, featuring the top seniors from the Western AAA and AA Conferences, will be held Saturday at Jackson High School, with the girls game at 6 p.m., followed by the boys contest at 8 p.m.
The teams are divided into North and South squads from the WesCo AAA and AA.
The North teams will have players from Arlington, Cedarcrest, Everett, Marysville-Pilchuck, Monroe, Mount Vernon, Oak Harbor, Sehome, Snohomish, South Whidbey and Stanwood.
The South players will come from Cascade, Edmonds-Woodway, Jackson, Kamiak, Lake Stevens, Lynnwood, Mariner, Meadowdale, Mountlake Terrace, Shorecrest and Shorewood.
A $500 college scholarship will be awarded to one girl and one boy player from the Classic. Scholarship criteria include grade-point average, school activities and community involvement.
Playing for the North boys team from Class AAA state champion Sehome are guard Jeff Chapman, center Mark Spink and forward Ryan Kettman. Kettman was fourth in the WesCo AAA in scoring, averaging 16.5 points.
Also playing for the North is Snohomish center Kyle Sweet, who was second in the WesCo AAA in scoring at 19.7.
Playing guard for the North will be Monroe's Todd Hendry, the WesCo AA leading scorer at 24.0.
Playing for the South will be Meadowdale guard Matt Wieber, who was second in WesCo AA scoring at 18.6.
Cascade center Mike Jones, who was third in WesCo AAA scoring at 17.6, and Mountlake Terrace guard Sean Port, sixth in WesCo AAA scoring at 16.4.
In the girls game, playing for the North will be Snohomish guard Milena Flores, a three-time all-WesCo AAA player. Flores, who led the WesCo AAA in assists with a 5.8 average, has accepted a basketball scholarship from Stanford.
Oak Harbor guard Becki Matzen, the WesCo AAA leading scorer at 16.7, will play for the North.
Also playing for the North is Monroe forward Alison Kirk, who led the Bearcats to a third-place finish at the Class AA state tournament.
The South team will be led by twin guards Bethany and Shalina Martos from Shorewood.
Also playing for the South is Lake Stevens forward Shaina Rogers, third in WesCo AA scoring at 14.5.
Meadowdale guard Laura Hoppe, the WesCo AA leader in assists at 6.1, will play for the South, as will center Jenny Baker of Edmonds-Woodway, who has accepted a basketball scholarship from Northern Arizona University.
The boys coaches for the Classic will be Sehome's Pat Fitterer for the South and Cascade's Jerry Koester for the North.
Coaching the girls will be Everett's Jo Metzger-Levin for the South and Meadowdale's Karen Rivard for the North.
