Group To Honor 15 People For Helping Inner-City Youth

SEATTLE - The Martin Luther King Keeping the Dream Alive Coalition, a nonprofit community organization, tomorrow will honor 15 people for their efforts to improve the lives of inner-city youth.

Most of the recipients are affiliated with the Central Area Motivation Program's Rites of Passage Experience (ROPE). That program offers counseling, job-search assistance, peer mentoring and other services to youths who are considered "at risk."

The program's co-founders, Gregory Davis, Michael Grant, and Maxine Mimms, founder of the Evergreen State College, are among the honorees.

Also to be recognized are 12 Seattle youths, ages 14 to 20, who are involved in ROPE: Lakema Bell, Irving Nichols, Maria Clark, Lenardo White, Charniece Carter, Crystal, Arvell Beaver, Stanislow Ogwel, Juree Parks, Kitalil Gardner, Rosie Benson and Donisha Humphrey.

The awards ceremony will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Seattle Center House. The program will feature speeches, an auction of Seattle Sonics memorabilia and small-group discussions. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free.
