NBA -- Barros' Streak Of 3-Pointers Halted By N.Y. -- Misses All Eight Attempts; Record Ends At 89 Games
BOSTON - Dana Barros' NBA record streak of 89 games with a three-point basket ended last night, as the Boston Celtics lost 105-92 to the New York Knicks.
Barros missed all eight of his attempts, including five in the final minute as he tried desperately to keep the streak intact. The Knicks were just as determined to stop him as they triple-teamed him on his two attempts in the last two seconds.
As the game ended, Knick Coach Don Nelson smiled and patted Barros on the back, but Boston Coach M.L. Carr appeared furious, throwing the basketball toward Nelson.
Barros' three-point shot with 55 seconds remaining was blocked. All four of his tries in the last 15 seconds were forced shots that missed badly. On the last two, he was surrounded by Anthony Mason, Charles Smith and Gary Grant.
The streak began Dec. 23, 1994, when Barros was with Philadelphia. He broke Michael Adams' record of 79 games Dec. 22 against Minnesota.
Notes
-- The Vancouver Grizzlies made two player moves, signing center Rich Manning and trading point guard Darrick Martin for a draft pick.
Manning, 25, spent the first 13 games of the season on the Grizzlies' injured list before being waived Nov. 27. The 6-foot-11, 260-pound Manning, a former Washington Husky, averaged 13.9 points and 5.8 rebounds in 52 games for the Quad City Thunder of the Continental Basketball Association last season.
The Grizzlies dealt Martin to Minnesota for a second-round
pick in this year's draft. Martin played for the Timberwolves last season but was released in November. Martin, from UCLA, played 24 games for Vancouver, averaging 6.7 points and 2.5 assists per game.
-- The Orlando Magic placed forward Horace Grant on the injured list because of a stress fracture in his lower left leg that is expected to sideline him at least five games.
The Magic activated forward Jeff Turner, who had been on the injured list since Nov. 9 with a knee injury, before last night's game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Magic also announced a game with Philadelphia, postponed because of the blizzard, has been rescheduled for March 4.
