Girls Basketball -- Eastlake Jolts No. 3 Kangs
REDMOND - Center Shera Looney nailed an 18-foot, go-ahead jump shot with 1:05 to play and guard Kim Sorenson added two clinching free throws with six seconds remaining as eighth-ranked Eastlake upset No. 3 Lake Washington 50-46 in a KingCo Conference girls basketball game last night at Eastlake High School.
Looney finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots despite playing much of the second half in foul trouble.
The Division I-leading Kangaroos (7-1 in KingCo, 13-2 overall) forced three ties in the fourth quarter, the final one at 46 with 1:35 left on forward Sara Devine's 15-footer.
Division III-leading Eastlake (8-0, 10-2) opened a 10-point lead in the second quarter with a 19-2 run, but LW countered with a 17-3 spurt to regain the lead, 28-24, by halftime.
There were five ties in the third period.
Sorenson led the Wolves with 17 points. Guard Martha Yarbrough was high for Lake Washington with 14 points, 10 in the first half.

Kent-Meridian 50, Kentridge 42 - Despite a slow start, the fourth-ranked Royals remained unbeaten in South Puget Sound League North Division play. K-M (7-0, 9-2) was down 20-14 at halftime, but was on top 32-30 heading into the fourth quarter. Erin Thomas broke loose for 18 points, while Tina Garrett had 12. Nicole Brannan topped Kentridge (2-6, 3-8) with 12 points.
At Federal Way 75, Decatur 44 - The Eagles (5-2, 8-2) wasted no time in taking control in the South Puget Sound League North Division game, busting out to a 23-10 first-quarter lead. They were up 41-17 by halftime. Neesha Thomas led the balanced attack with 14 points. Jessica Iserman added 12 points, while Jodie Kaczor and Clarisha Atkins chipped in 11 apiece. For Decatur (2-6, 3-9), Stephanie High scored 14 points and Karen Nadeau had 10.
At Auburn 48, Auburn Riverside 11 - Celeste Hill scored 16 points and Heidi Simms added 10 as Auburn (6-1, 8-3) rolled past the winless Ravens in the SPSL North Division game. After a sluggish first quarter, when they led just 9-4, the Trojans opened up a 21-8 halftime lead, then held Auburn Riverside scorless in the third period.
At Kentwood 56, Jefferson 51 - Brianna Murff, a 6-foot sophomore, tossed in seven of her 12 points in the decisive third quarter, when the Conquerors (3-4, 5-6, outscored Jefferson 15-7 in the SPSL North Division game. Sophomore Candi Criscione did her best to keep the Raiders (2-4, 7-4) in the game, hitting nine of 13 shots from the field for a game-high 19 points. Jessica Cap added 11. Kentwood's leading scorer was Melissa O'Connell, who canned 15. Michelle Beasley chipped in 10.
At Kennedy 83, Hazen 38 - Kennedy, ranked No. 5 in The Times Class AA poll, had 10 turnovers in the first quarter and watched Hazen take a 21-15 lead in the Seamount League game. But turnabout is fair play, and the Lancers crushed Hazen with a 19-2 run over the second quarter of the Seamount League game. Kennedy's full-court press did the trick, as it finished with 23 steals and built its largest winning margin of the season. Lindsey Johnson had 14 points to lead the balanced scoring of Kennedy (5-0 Sea Division, 11-1 overall). Ashley Roehl and Tracy Wilcoxen each scored 11 for Hazen (2-3 Mountain Division, 3-8).
Mount Si 53, at Renton 21 - Missing their top three scorers, Renton was no match for Mount Si, which leads the Seamount League Mountain Division at 5-0. Renton (2-3 Sea Division, 4-6 overall) stayed close for a quarter, but Mount Si (8-4 overall) pulled away with a 15-2 run in the second period. Natashe David, who leads Renton in scoring with 15 points per game, was out with a sprained ankle, while two other starters were out because of a Tuesday ejection and an illness. Kari Ewin led Mount Si with 15 points, while Kelly Stubbert and Nikki Hover added 10 each.
Mount Rainier 40, at Tyee 32 - Teresa DeDonato scored all 20 of her points in the second half, 14 in the final quarter, as the Rams came from behind for the Seamount League victory. Tyee (2-3 Mountain Division, 6-6 overall) led 15-10 at halftime. Mount Rainier (3-2 Sea Division, 5-7 overall) jumped in front 22-20 in the third quarter. Mindy Wernex paced the Totems with 14 points.
At Lindbergh 44 Highline 39 - Leah Paddock did a little big of everything as the Eagles posted the Seamount League victory. She contributed 16 points, seven rebounds, five steals and four assists. Lindbergh (3-2 Mountain Division, 6-7 overall) jumped to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter, but Highline (2-3 Sea Division, 6-5 overall) was back in it by halftime. Kemo Savage added 11 points for the Eagles, while Highline was led by Tatum Slining's 10 points.
At Liberty 51, Evergeen 46 - Michelle Geiger scored 15 points and Nicole Sauvageau added 14 as Liberty built an 18-point lead and held off a Wolverine comeback in the Seamount League game. Liberty improved to 2-3 in the Sea Division, 3-8 overall, while Evergreen slipped to 0-5 in the Mountaind Division, 3-9 overall.
Tahoma 74, at Washington 49 - The Bears led the Pierce County League game by 10 points at halftime, 37-27, then blew it open in the third quarter. Melanie Frank and Val Rainis paced the offense with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
Foster 76, at Orting 23 - Sherita Apodaco scored 17 points and Sondra Krantz exploded for a season-high 15 as the Bulldogs (5-0, 10-1) cruised to the Nisqually League victory. Foster, a Class A power that plays AA Enumclaw in a nonleague game tonight, was in front 21-3 by the end of the first quarter.
