Girls Basketball -- Kangaroos Win Opener In Oregon Tournament

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. - Kelly Middlesworth scored 16 points and Martha Yarbrough had 11, leading 11 players into the scoring column as Lake Washington beat Riverdale of Tennessee 59-42 yesterday in the Lake Oswego Interstate girls basketball tournament.

It was the eighth straight victory for the unbeaten Kangaroos.

Middlesworth had seven points in the first quarter and finished with five assists. Yarbrough had seven assists and three steals. Anna Sturing had six rebounds and three blocks.

Sammamish 54, Julian (San Diego) 48 - Sammamish was missing both its 6-foot players, so Jenny Lauren stepped into the breach. The 5-8 senior forward scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Sammamish in the Ramona Roundball Shootout in Ramona, Calif., near San Diego. Sammamish (2-4) lost its height when Stacey Emerick came down with the flu and Gina Belloni needed to attend to family matters. Shelby Henkel and Heidi Brunhaver each had 10 points for Sammamish, which will play in the championship against Ramona, an unbeaten team that defeated Capistrano Valley Christian in the semifinals.

Ocean View, Calif., 50, Eastlake 49 - Two free throws by Andrea Tuiolosega with four seconds left iced the game in the Marina Register Tournament in Huntington Beach, Calif. Eastlake led most of the game but shot poorly in the fourth quarter, mustering only four points. Kim Sorenson had 16 points, and Shera Looney and Trisha Huffman each had 11 for Eastlake (6-1).

Inglemoor 66, Ashland, Ore. 58 (at Bend, Ore.) - Inglemoor used this game as a tuneup for Wednesday's KingCo duel with Interlake, and it appears to be hitting on all cylinders - four players scored in double figures. With the starting lineup slightly shifted, Cori Enghusen peeled off the bench with 2 minutes left in the first quarter to score 18 points with 14 rebounds and 11 blocks. Kim Formo, not a regular starter, did make a start, and scored 10 of her 16 points in the first half. Rose Connely had 15 points and nine assists and Serene Smart had 10 for Inglemoor (6-2).

Auburn 66, St. Mary's (Portland) 43 - Heidi Simms scored 12 of her 21 points in the first half as Auburn (4-1) won its opener in the Lake Oswego Interstate Shootout in Oregon. Auburn (4-1) will play Lakeridge (Lake Oswego) in a semifinal game today. Lakeridge beat North Medford 59-44 in its opener.

Fountain Valley 53, Kent-Meridian 45 - Kent-Meridian (5-1) could not overcome its disadvantage at the free-throw line in the Orange County Register Tournament game in Huntington Beach, Calif. Kent-Meridian was 3 for 6 from the line, while Fountain Valley was 26 for 33.
