Tonya Harding Marries, Hopes For Family, Sedate Life

PORTLAND - Nancy Kerrigan probably wasn't on the guest list.

Former figure-skating champion Tonya Harding married machinist Michael Smith yesterday on a yacht on the Willamette River.

Only a few family members and friends were invited.

It is the fourth marriage for Smith, 29. It is Harding's second marriage. Her first husband was Jeff Gillooly, who changed his last name to Stone after he admitted plotting a Jan. 6, 1994, attack on Kerrigan.

Gillooly and three other men served prison sentences for carrying out the attack on Kerrigan as she was preparing for the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit.

Harding, 25, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to hinder prosecution in the case. But she denied knowing in advance about the attack, which was carried out to ensure that Harding would reap the financial benefits that often go to the world's top woman figure skater.

Kerrigan, who was clubbed on the knee, did not compete at the national championships, but won the silver medal at the Olympics. Harding won the national title before the attack was linked to her husband. Harding failed to win a medal at the Olympics, which were held after the details of the attack became public.

On Friday, Harding skated at her old home rink at the crowded Clackamas Town Center shopping mall. Wearing a Santa hat, she skated a solo routine for the crowd.

Harding said she looks forward to leading a more sedate life, starting a family and someday living on a farm.

"I'm very happy," she said, "and I hope to keep it that way."
