Chase Suspect Arrested

SEATTLE - A Kirkland man accused of shooting at a police officer during a high-speed chase from Edmonds to Seattle was arrested last night in Seattle.

Nathaniel Richard Sanders Jr., 34, was apprehended as he fled a motel in the Georgetown area, Edmonds Police Officer Michael Bard said.

A warrant Thursday from King County Superior Court charged Sanders with first-degree assault, attempting to elude an officer and illegal possession of a handgun.

The chase began early Tuesday when police spotted a Cadillac being driven erratically in south Edmonds. Officer Mike Bowers tried to pull the car over, but it sped away.

Police cars from Mountlake Terrace, Seattle and the Washington State Patrol joined the 12-mile chase, during which shots were fired from the Cadillac.

One bullet pierced the windshield of Bowers' patrol car, wounding him. Doctors believe a bullet fragment went through the officer's ear.

Bowers' patrol car crashed into a house in Seattle's Montlake neighborhood. No one in the home was injured.
