Baseball -- Newson Signs With Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas - Outfielder Warren Newson and the Texas Rangers agreed to a one-year contract that will play him $200,000 if he's in the majors and $75,000 in the minors.

Newson can earn an additional $50,000 in performance bonuses under the deal agreed to Wednesday.

Newson hit .261 last season for the Chicago White Sox and Seattle with five homers and 15 RBIs in 157 at-bats. He had a $200,000 salary.

-- The Cleveland Indians today re-signed a core of veterans from their AL championship team and added infielder Julio Franco to their roster. Outfielder Manny Ramirez ($10.15 million over four years), first baseman and and designated hitter Eddie Murray ($2 million); pitcher Orel Hersheiser ($2.7 million extension for 1997), infielder Alvaro Espinoza ($400,000) and Franco ($5 million over two years) all agreed to deals. Ramirez, had a $150,000 salary last season, when he made the AL All-Star team. -- Jim Eisenreich re-signed with the Philadelphia Phillies today for the same salary he earned the past two years. Eisenreich, 36, will get $1.2 million for his 15th pro season and the chance to earn $125,000 more in performance bonuses. -- Chris Sabo, who won NL Rookie of the Year and All-Star honors as the Cincinnati Reds third baseman, agreed to a minor-league contract today. -- Hal Morris decided to stay with the Cincinnati Reds for $5 million over two years. Morris, who made $3.3 million last season, agreed to take a pay cut of more than 50 percent for 1996. He had been close to a deal with the San Francisco Giants before deciding he wanted to stay with the Reds.
