Boys Basketball -- Johnson Hits 35 To Lead Ballard Past Lynnwood
LYNNWOOD - Ballard's Michael Johnson continues to pick up where it left off last season.
The junior guard, one of the area's leading scorers, scored 35 points to lead the Ballard Beavers past Lynnwood 84-72 in a nonleague prep boys basketball game last night.
Johnson scored 19 points in the first half for Ballard (2-0), which led 41-28 at halftime.
Then Alex Zardis took over. He scored 17 of his 27 points in the second half.
Jelani Guilmet scored 14 to lead Lynnwood (0-2).
WESCO
At Sehome 95, Kamiak 42 - The Mariners (1-0, 2-0) romped to their second straight victory, building a 53-23 halftime lead in the WesCo AAA game. Guard Jared Stevenson pumped in 25 points, while forward Ryan Kettman collected 13 points and nine rebounds.
Shorecrest 51, at Everett 39 - The move up to Class AAA didn't bother Shorecrest as the Scots (1-0, 1-0) jumped to a 15-6 first-quarter lead and were never threatened. Senior Bryan Parker collected 20 points, scoring seven in the first quarter and nine in the fourth.
Snohomish 67, Shorewood 39 - The Panthers dominated in the first and fourth quarters, outscoring Shorewood 41-17 in the two frames to capture the WesCo AAA contest.
At Oak Harbor 66, Mountlake Terrae 58 - Trailing by seven points after three quarters, Oak Harbor rallied to take the lead and hit 14 fourth-quarter free throws for a WesCo AA victory in the Wildcats' opener. Terrace (0-1 WesCo, 1-1 overall) hit only 10 of 20 free throws, while Oak Harbor made 24 of 41. Sean Port's 22 points led Terrace.
NONLEAGUE GAMES
At Interlake 73, Cedarcrest 54 - Marco Quinto poured in 27 points, and the Saints blew open a close game with a 23-13 scoring advantage in the third period. Travis Smith and Nate Brigham each scored 10 for Cedarcrest.
At Garfield 76, Lindbergh 56 - Junior point guard Jerry Petty paced a balanced Bulldog attack with 15 points. Robert Jeffcoat contributed 14 and Matt Metzger 13. The Bulldogs (1-0) constructed a 43-24 halftime edge. Ryan Deyak and Nate Bash each netted 12 for the Eagles (0-2).
Woodinville 60, Cascade 54 - Marques Tuiasosopo scored seven of his 17 points in the fourth quarter as the Falcons held on in their season opener. Ryan Mackey scored a game-high 22 for Cascade, and John Farzcek added 14.
Ingraham 73, at Monroe 64 - Meshack Williams, the Rams' 6-10 senior center, dominated inside with 23 points, 13 rebounds and three blocked shots as Ingraham won a season opener. Mikael Moore added 20 points for Ingraham. Todd Hendry scored 23 for Monroe (0-1).
At Rogers 62, Auburn 51 - Jason Kitts, a 6-4 senior, had career highs of 25 points and 13 rebounds for the Rams (2-0) to offset a 27-point effort by Shaun Madsen of the Trojans (0-1). Jason Littleton added 17 points and eight rebounds for Rogers, which led by 14 at halftime.
At Mount Rainier 76, Cleveland 56 - The Rams (1-1) built a 14-point halftime lead with a 20-4 second-quarter scoring advantage and used free throws to hold off the Eagles (1-1). Mount Rainier hit 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to pull away. Kyle Moor's 15 points led a balanced Ram offense. Brian Noche had 13 points and Leo Dickerson 12 for Cleveland.
Mount Baker 52, at Stanwood 47 - Stanwood made just eight of 21 free throws, including a chilly two-for-nine from the line in the fourth quarter in its opener. Scott Mason's 21 points led the Spartans. Adam Pinkey had 17 and David Galbraith 14 for Mount Baker.
Chief Sealth 54, at Bainbridge 53 - The Seahawks of the Metro League watched an 11-point halftime lead evaporate before holding on. Sealth hit 10 of 15 fourth-quarter free throws to hang on. Mike Griffin led Sealth with 18 points. Michael Halligan had 14 points and Greg Spooner 12 points and 12 rebounds for Bainbridge (1-1).
Orting 59, at Riverside 47 - Auburn's Riverside faded in the final 2 1/2 minutes as the Ravens lost the new school's first game in a nonleague contest. Matt Scarlett had 10 points for the Ravens. Jay Palmer's 15 points led Orting.
White River 72, at Renton 48 - The Hornets (1-0), second in state last season, started this year with the easy win, outscoring Renton 20-7 in the second quarter. Ben Addink led with 18 points and Charles Gillis contributed 16. Anthony Williams led Renton 11.
At Peninsula 42, Port Townsend 39 - Dave Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds as the Seahawks (1-1) survived 18 points by Port Townsend's Abe Fox. Antonio Reed, a 6-6 senior, added 13 points and seven rebounds for Peninsula.
At Redmond 76, Marysville-Pilchuck 51 - Geoff Linville, Brian Falkenborg and Chris Hunter combined for 60 points as the Mustangs won their season opener. Linville scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half. Falkenborg had 20 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Hunter added 18 points and point guard Paul Kennedy had nine assists for Redmond. Bubba Fryberg scored 17 points for the Tomahawks (0-2).
Portland Lutheran 46, Seattle Lutheran 40 - Senior forward Drew deVry had 14 points and 14 rebounds, but it wasn't enough as Matt Jordan scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half in the Saints' season opener in the Portland Lutheran Tournament at Concordia College.
At Roosevelt 68, Prairie 66 - Greg Anderson hit two free throws with seven seconds left to lift the Roughriders to the victory. Kyle Kiang led Roosevelt (1-0) with 19 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks. Anderson added 18 points and eight rebounds. Mike Hansen led Prairie with 18 points.
At Watson Groen Christian 65, Holy Cross 45 - Andrew Vanderwerff had 25 points as the Crusaders rolled to victory.
