College Basketball -- Old Dominion Surprises Georgia
NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion and Georgia had not played each other since the 1985 women's NCAA championship game. When they met again, the result was the same: The Monarchs won.
"This was our chance to earn some respect, but it wasn't a guarantee," said Old Dominion Coach Wendy Larry, whose team beat No. 2 Georgia 67-64 yesterday in the final round of the Dial Soap Classic. "This game wasn't a fluke. Now we have to build on this victory."
Ticha Penicheiro stole the ball for a layup with 42 seconds left to give Old Dominion (2-0) a 65-64 lead. Sarah Willyerd made two foul shots with 12 seconds left for the final margin.
The Monarchs held Georgia (1-1) to 40-percent field-goal shooting.
"Our shot selection was not very good," said Georgia Coach Andy Landers. "Individually, we were OK, but in team concept we were not."
Willyerd and Mary Andrade led Old Dominion with 14 points each. Saudia Roundtree had 22 for Georgia.
