Kingco Conference -- Firestone Kicks Redmond Past Mercer Island -- Mustangs Win 2Nd Straight

MERCER ISLAND - Junior Patrick Firestone kicked two go-ahead field goals in the fourth quarter, including a 17-yard game-winner with 5 seconds left as Redmond beat Mercer Island 20-17 in a KingCo Conference cross-division football game last night at Mercer Island High School.

Firestone, a placekicker since ninth grade, made his first game-winner after Redmond gained 13 yards on holder Cameron Fricks' run around the left end on a fake field goal.

"I was really nervous - it was the last second and everything," Firestone said. "My team got us up there, and I wanted to get it for them."

Firestone appeared to get the Mustangs (2-0) a win when he gave Redmond its first lead, 17-14, with a 30-yarder 3 1/2 minutes into the fourth quarter.

But Mercer Island drove 64 yards - converting three fourth-down plays along the way, to set up Dan Ahlers' 28-yard field goal with 38 seconds to go.

"Our kids didn't panic. They thought they could win it with 38 seconds left," Redmond Coach Rik Haines said. "I'm real proud of my team."

The key play of Redmond's final drive was a double pass - quarterback Cameron Fricks to Brandon Boone to Jason McDougal for 38 yards. That gave Redmond the ball at the M.I. 14 with 18 seconds left.

Mercer Island fell to 1-1.

After scoring 40 points against Edmonds-Woodway last week, the Mustangs were shut out in the first half last night by a combination of lengthy Mercer Island drives and an almost inpenetrable Islander defense.

M.I. limited Redmond to only five offensive plays in the first quarter and 10 in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the Islander rolled up 193 yards and 10 first downs in the half, while controlling the ball 17 minutes, 17 seconds.
